Finding a newer 4 stroke motor for my old 13' Whaler

OK - Who knows how to solve this dilemma? In the Lake Tahoe area all boats are required to have 4 stroke engines, so my 2 stroke 35 HP evinrude will no longer be legal on my 13' Boston Whaler sport - a 60's model with a 15" transom.<br /><br />I have been searching for a decent 30-40 HP 4 stroke motor with power tilt and trim that will fit the short transom and no one seems to make one anymore. I have been advised to either forego the power tilt/trim and get a yamaha or mercury with the short shaft, or have my transom built up with a 5 inch piece of metal or wood that would bolt onto my back end. I don't like the idea of making my whaler look jerryrigged and take away from it's value. Does anyone know where to find a motor with the specs to fit onto my boat? Or do you think that modifying my boat would be the better alternative?

Not to quibble, but aren't you over the max horsepower rating on that boat with that hp? I know someone with a 40 hp 2 stroke on a BW13 and I believe it's over the rated horsepower (and looks it). <br /><br />If I'm wrong then I'd say try hard to get power trim because the weight of a 35 or 40hp 4 stroke on the back is going to give you trim issues (I know that a 40hp Merc 2 stroke does). You can buy an after market power trim unit from Clarkes. They run about $500, but they work well and will also set you back 4 or 5 inches off the transom which will probably improve your trim and performance. I'd do this before I raised the transom 5 ".

PL,<br /><br />CMC also make a power trim/tilt for smaller engines. One model up to 35 hp. and another for 35 hp. and up. They will also set back the engine 4-5 inches.<br /><br />They're available through Cabelas.<br /><br /> www.cabelas.com

Howdy, PL.<br /><br />Your boat is rated for up to 40hp.<br /><br />I think Tohatsu makes a 15" 4 stroke engine in the 25 to 40hp range. I could be wrong.<br /><br />If I were repowering a 13 I would put a jack plate on it and use one of the easy-to-find 25 to 40hp used Yammy or Honda engines.<br /><br />OR! I would find out if the 13 can handle the weight of the Suzi DF40. 240lb would be a lot for that hull.<br /><br />Good luck.

PL, Im dont know that much about about 4strokes<br /> except some are comprimise motors made from existing 4 strokes.I assume they give comprimise<br />performance.<br /> Unfortunately I dont know who builds best or lightest.<br />I do know there are a few 4 strokes(individual models) that are actually lighter than some 2 strokes. I believe Suzuki makes motors for E/J<br /> And I believe Tohatsu is built by another company.<br /> Not much help but Im going to have a look around if I find some info Ill get back.<br /> Take your time and have a good look around.

I have a 40hp merc on the back of my 74'13ft whaler. does a real nice job. The model # 40ELPTO<br />which means ,electric start,power trim,remote steer and controls.

Steelspike. <br /><br />What is a compromise engine? <br /><br />Suzuki does make Johnson's 4 strokes and did make Evinrude 4 strokes.<br /><br />Tohatsu has been making outboards since the 50s. They make the ones sold as Nisssan.<br /><br />risc.<br /><br />Is that a 4 stroke Merc 40? PL is looking for a 4 stroke.

Suzuki makes a 30 hp short shaft 4 stroke with power trim.
