I am doing a "refresh" on my 7.4L 454. The boat is a 1986. While scrounging for parts, I discovered that the water pump can be sourced at the local parts store by looking at a 1973 Corvette. Well, now I'm about to buy gaskets. Valve cover, oil pan, and exhaust manifold. Any ideas on what I should ask for at the parts store? They get completely befuddled if you have to tell them that it's a boat. I'm just not sure if I should be sourcing from an 1986 truck, or a 1973 Corvette. Thanks.

First of all t's not a good idea to run an automotive water pump. The marine ones use stainless steel parts. As far as those gaskets I would tell them a '86 truck or suburban. I wouldn't say '73 corvette as the heads may get confussed with the possibility of the large ports ones. What you have is a Mark IV big block chevy which were made from 1965-1990 with small port heads.

That's great info to know. Thanks!

I'm not concerned about running the non-marine water pump as my boat will never see anything close to salt-water. I've run auto water pumps for years with no side effects.

You will want SS head gaskets too.

Finding gaskets with SS in them may be tough anymore. Find a set of Felpro composit head gaskets. They will work just fine. You just don't want head gaskets with steel in them. The corrode and fail quickly.

Judging by his other post, he ain't doing anything. But so many do this & that's he may change his mind again.

Want to reword that so it means something?

I'm not sure what this means, or maybe it's not even talking about me. But I am putting in an exhaust gasket and have a Felpro set on order.

Interestingly enough, the previous owner did not have any gaskets on the exhaust manifold at all. Just metal to metal.

Last i knew the 17000 series Felpro had a stainless core. Have they changed them? I think Felpro was bought by someone else recently. I have not bought any in a couple years.

I think he might have meant you aren't removing the head so the head gasket everyone is talking about is of no concern. I have worked on cars that came from the factory with no exhaust gaskets. Your doing the right thing.

Ahh, that makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

The stainless core Felpro's are still availiable. Be ready to lighten your wallet by a Bengi for a pair of'm.

Felpro's owned by Federal-Mogul who also owns a lot of other parts companies.
