finished powerhead rebuild, now have starting issue

hello all, 1998 mercury 150 2 stroke, carbd, just finished my rebuild, got it back on the boat, go to start it up and all its doing is spittn and sputtering, its backfires randomly. all the coils seemed to be working fine as i cranked it up and had it running before the rebuild. any help please, ive been working on this for a month now and im ready to hit the water!

I would check to make sure the sync and link setup is correct, and then double check all preliminary adjustments. If all is ok here, the next thing I would do is pop the flywheel back off, and make sure it is indexed correctly. If you slammed her on there a tooth off of where it should be, you'll have timing issues. Kinda' sounds like that's what may have happened.

And it now does not run
It's something you did.

Believe it or not, that factoid is the hardest thing I ever had to teach young men I was training to be field engineers.

well pappy, i rebuilt my powerhead due to preignition on my number 4 cylinder. i dont waste my time doing stuff that dont need to be done. i was raised on if it aint broke dont fix it. it still ran with the blown cylinder.
