Finishes for teak

Hi
Can anyone offer advice on sealing teak in and out of the cabin.

I have seen some that seal the wood and look almost like golden oak. I am thinking I would like to use that on the areas prone to moisture cockpit rails etc.

I also have a good amount inside the cabin & would like to oil that -- Most of the oils I have used create a lot of fumes and would limit the application to the off season/ Not sure it their is a good way to do it with low VOC's.

Wellcraft-clasic210, teak wood is a real oily wood and dense. And that is one reason it doesn't rot so easily. Most any type sealer you will use would have to have the teak wiped down with acetone or lacquer thinner before applying any type sealer/finisher. Otherwise the oil on the surface may keep the finish from sealing. There are tones of articles online dealing with sealing finishing teak wood. I suggest you take some time and read a few before venturing into this project. Most any type sealer/finisher you would use will certainly need to have UV inhibiters in it as well to keep the teak from turning silver-gray. I know from a woodworkers perspective that teak has to be treated differently from other woods as far as gluing teak projects up do to the oily nature of teak. JMHO!

I've used an oil finishing product called Penofin, and had pretty good luck. They have a variety of similar products to choose from, depending on your priorities. See: http://www.penofin.com/wood-stains/index

Automotive automatic transmission fluid, wipe on and let set for an hour then wipe off excess. Reapply as needed. Quick, easy, and you'll be amazed at the results.
