What a horrible tragedy, nobody wins here. I'm sure he regrets his actions and stupidity and will for the rest of his life. It just leaves me shaking my head because it didn't have to happen.

I remember a local started a thread back when it happened. Very sad.
Even if they hadn't "thrown the book" at him, he's going to live with that for the rest of his life.

Booze speed and dark do not mix well at all, I run almost exclusively at night and it is scary even on waters you know well and I never go much over 10-15mph even though I have been on these waters for years.

Makes you think thats for sure.

steered his 23-foot Chaparral bow-rider into a concrete-based channel marker topped by a blinking red light visible from four miles away. never would have happened if it wasnt for the alcoho.l The sad part is that the other adults on board could have choose not to be there but the kids I would say had no Idea of any aparent danger.

From what I remember from a previous thread, that has happened before at that location.
Even sober, warning lights can blend in with the shore lights. Alcohol makes the combination deadly. I'm agree that the kids had no say in the events leadng to the accident.
Tragic.

Ive never been there but seems to me a red blinking light woul be easy to see at night if you wernt drunk wernt speeding and were concerned about the safety of your own family and friends on a boat that you were behind the wheel of.

I have been in situations where lights blend into the shore lights. Add alcohol and/or speed into the mix and you've already handicapped yourself at a time that you really need your A-game.

Horrible story. Booze and boats don't mix especially at night. This one is especially bad piloting a boat like that with kids on board.

A sad story with a sad ending. Nothing good can ever result from that mixture of boating's perfect storm..

That's what I'm thinking.

People think this is throwing the book at him. 18yo kids do more time in jail for sex with their 16yo girlfriends than this guy will do. He'll probably get the minimums, 5 years 8 months, make parole after 30%, so he'll do what, a 2 year stint?

HE may have resigned the chief job but you can bet he's still in the union...and collecting?
But thats what they pay in for.

Its gonna ruin his drinking.
