Quick question. Do I drop the entire lower unit to get to the impeller? To be more precise...do I drop from the bottom of the white portion of the leg or do I drop the entire white portion?

looks like you can drop it from below the white portion, if there isnt something like a shift rod that will hold you up.

Dropped both pieces(sort of) of LU and now I can't figure out how to disconnect the electric shift cable. Can't tell if it disconnects within
the leg itself or up at the power head.

I've got the motor laying on the ground(no engine stand), so it's a pain in the arse trying to figure this thing out.

Here's the schematic....anyone have any ideas how to disconnect it?

It should disconnect at the powerhead. Look for a blue and green wire with rubber slip boots.

Yup...you're right. I got impatient waiting for a reply to my question and just opened up the exhaust jacket and found the wires. LU is off and the impeller was in pretty good shape. There was only a slight "set" in the blades, but the rubber is supple with no cracks or any signs of wear/deterioration.

I'm going to install it on the good motor and see if it'll pump water. I'll order a new impeller shortly, but hopefully the 'used' impeller will
get me on the water tomorrow or Tuesday.

Hopefully, after I get it on the water...I won't have to start one of those "Motor runs on muffs, but not under load" threads. :D

Update:
Put the boat on the water and it still starts after only a 1/2 a revolution of the flywheel :D It's def lacking power...got it to 24mph. I pulled plug wires and 2 cylinders don't seem to be firing(or are firing intermittently). As u may be able to see in the video, when I pull the plug there is a ton of hotspark if keep the boat near the plug. The odd thing is that when I pulled the top plug the motor no change(not firing), but it is firing when boot is very close to electrode.

I'm going to change plugs tomorrow. 1 cylinder has a heli-coil in it and the insert comes out with the plug. How do I separate the sleeve from the plug without damaging it?

Seems like I'm really close to making this motor ROAR again, but I'm getting frustrated.

Also, I don't know how to adjust the high speed needles. I need to make sure the mix is right.

BTW: I broke part of my steering. If you know how I can repair it, check out the thread I started about it.

I believe heli-coils are supposed to be installed using locktite, might need to install a new one using the proper procedure.
By the parts breakdown that I looked at your engine has fixed orifices (jets), no adjustments to be made.

Yikes, that sux. I hope I can find another sleeve that's the same size/thread. I'm going to put some heat on it to try to get this one off.

Is it ok to start the motor with the plug out so i can see if there's spark? I know there's coming thru the wire. but I'd like to visually confirm that the plug is actually firing. I pulled the suspected bad plug(s) and sometimes the motor stumbles a tad, sometimes not.

Sure, go ahead and spin it over to check the spark.

Any idea what the correct plugs are? The current plugs are NGKs which I suspect aren't the preferred plug for this motor.

If I confirm that all cylinders ARE firing, and I'm still without much power...what is the next likely cause? Carbs are clean, fuel pump seems to be ok(I pumped bulb while running WOT...no change), carb butterflies are completely open at WOT.

I don't know how to "sync and link" with this motor and can't seem to search correctly to find out how it's done. I don't have a manual yet.

Re: Fire damage to my 1967 Johnson 80hp. Need help (Watch video for details)

Ok, I just changed all plugs. Motor seems to run a bit better, but the port side bank of cylinders is still not firing(or maybe they are firing intermittently). I pulled the plug wire and let the spark arc to the plug and now it seems to be orange rather than white/blue that it was yesterday. What could cause this?

I read somewhere here that the red/white(candy cane looking) resistor wire is important. When I was fixing the burnt wires, I spliced in some 'regular wire' where the resistor wire was damaged. Could this be causing me any of my probsprobs?

My motor has a single coil, so I don't know how one bank could be firing well and the other side isn't. I did read a thread somewhere here with someone who had the same prob. I just can't remember how he solved the prob.

Could my points or condenser be the culprit? I've got a spare parts motor, so I'm going to try and switch the coils and see if that helps at all. My boat isn't at home, so it's a pain in the arse to travel back and forth to the water trying new things.

I'm going to try to sand and reset the points(I've never done it before) also. Anyone have any tips on how to set points. I saw a thread here about the adjusting screw under the dist cap. Is it something I manually loosen and manually move the points? Does it matter where the throttle is when I adjust points?
I'm going back to my boat in the morning, so I need some help pretty quickly.

Throttle has no bearing on points setting, but the rubbing block MUST be on the high point of the cam.

Is the rubbing block, the roller thing in this pic? If so, what is considered the top of the cam?

Never mind. I found the rubber stop under the distributor. If anyone has any advice/suggestions on why my port side cylinders aren't firing(or are maybe firing intermittently) please let me know.

Yet another update: The good news is that I got her up to 32mph today...the increase in power was noticeable. It jumped up on plane fairly quickly.:D

Not sure yet if all cylinders are firing cause I wasn't able to check the plugs after my test run. The shift linkage keeps coming apart. Not sure if I'm pushing the shift rod in the linkage too far when I tighten the screw...or not enough. Now i've got to get another screw at Home depot cause some threads are worn flat and I can't tighten it properly. I've got the lower unit off AGAIN, and I'm bringing the brass linkage with me, so I get the correct screw.

I was able to set the points also. Hopefully I did it correctly. I also changed out the resistor wire going to the coil. Didn't make any difference from what I can see. Are there a set of points for each bank of cylinders? I'm wondering if a bad set of points is causing the spark issues on the port side. I'm getting spark on the port side, but I'm guessing it isn't hot enough cause I'm still seeing wet plugs.

I also cleaned up the rotor a bit with 2000 grit sandpaper and got the schmutz off it. Going to sand the points tomorrow to make sure they are clean.

Anyone know how to sync and link this motor?

Anyone know how to sync and link this motor?? Also there are 2 sets of points...is one set for each bank of cylinders? I'm trying to figure out why the port side cylinders don't seem to be firing properly. I get spark to arc to the plug when I hold the boot away from the plug end, but when I pull the plugs they are wet. The plugs are brand new.

It's a single coil, so I doubt it could be a coil issue.

Re: Fire damage to my 1967 Johnson 80hp. Need help (Watch video for details)

Haven't had any replies to my questions, so I've been 'winging' it the last couple days. Today, I took off the dist cap and cleaned all the contact points on the cap and sanded and re-set the points AGAIN.
I managed to get another screw for the shift linkage. Of course, when I test fired the motor I didn't see much water...so to be on the safe side I dropped the LU again to make sure all the plumbing was connected. I think I've dropped the LU about 5 times in the last 3 days dealing with the shift linkage etc. :(

I finally got the LU back on and the motor all buttoned up this afternoon and test fired the motor.

VOILA!!!!! All cylinders are firing and it's running smoothly :D I pulled all 4 plugs one by one and the motor stumbled on each plug.

The boat's going back in the water tomorrow. I'm expecting 40+mph now that all cylinders are running(fingers crossed)

You should definitely get the FSM for the link n' sync procedure. It will also help to shed some light on any other repairs that you may need to do. Also, you'll find that you'll get more timely responses if you keep one topic per thread. This thread is becoming hard to follow (at least for me). When you've solved one problem, just make a "sign-off" reply and then start a new thread with the next topic.

The current plugs are NGKs which I suspect aren't the preferred plug for this motor.

Did you ever find out the correct plugs? I know that for my 1963 motor, NGK are NOT recommended. Champion J4C are the plug for my motor. You could call a marine shop if you can't find the info online.

I read somewhere here that the red/white(candy cane looking) resistor wire is important.

That wire is important for extending the life of the contact points. It simply cuts down on the current that passes through the points sets, thereby decreasing the chance of "burning out" the points in a short time. The ignition should work fine without the resistor wire, though the points will need to be replaced more often. At least this is my understanding of this ignition system.

Keep us updated.

All forums seem to have diff rules. I'm used to being on forums that frown on starting additional threads for every little thing.
I ended up putting in AC Delco plugs, couldn't find J6C plugs locally. The NAPA guys gave me the "stink eye" when I mentioned that NGK plugs were in my motor. :D
