Re: Fire Fox

Congratulations.
I've been using Firefox for a few years now.
Now, go download sister product Thunderbird to replace that email thing that comes with Windows (been so long I forgot the name!).

It's an Email client sort of like Outlook Express. Like Firefox, it's very basic in nature but accepts add-ons to add themes, features/extra functionality. If you used a Web-based email service (Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc...) you probably don't need it.

More about it here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/

Need a calendar? You may also be interested in Lightning or Sunbird: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/

Edit:

I forgot to mention my favorite feature of Thunderbird. The SPAM filter! It learns and gets better as you use it.

My favorite extensions are Adblock Plus, Flashblock (keeps flash movies from auto playing), and ForecastFox (nice weather forecast right in your browser).

Re: Fire Fox

Mine are:

Forecastbar Enhanced - Weather
Back to top - Adds go to top or bottom to right-click menu. Nice for navigating forums.
Hyperwords - Right-click any word for lots of options
IE Tab - Renders that tab in IE (For stuff that woesn't work with Firefox IE, Windows Server Update Services at work)

Web Developer - I don't use it much anymore. Very good tool though.

Re: Fire Fox

The reason Microsloth exploder, Adobe Acrobat, and others are so slow is that they try to load up and run a gazillion bells and whistles you'll never use, and they also try to take over everything in your computer even romotely related or linkable to it. All the scanning for hooks and links takes time.

Leave FoxFire alone. If there's a particular add-on you would like, load it in and try it. If it isn't up to snuff, remove it right away. If you allow every browser-helper that wants to install itself to go ahead, you'll soon have bloatware similar to the stock stuff.\

There are also many other quickies out there. The above Adobe is replaced nicely with Foxit reader. Loads in a fraction of a second with a 100 page manual on my old (Acer aspire 5000) laptop vs about 5 seconds for Adobe.

You can get the most often needed feature of the over $300 Acrobat program free and fast with CuteDBF. That's the writer, or what acrobat calls a distiller. It's basically a printer driver that takes the print output and makes a pdf file out of it.

hope it helps

Re: Fire Fox

My favorite Firefox add-on is Foxmarks. If I add a new favorite on my laptop, it automatically adds it to my desktop, work laptop, and work desktop the next time I open Firefox on those computers. Having all of my favorites the exact same no matter what computer I am on (2 are Macs and 2 are Windows) is the best thing since sliced bread for me.
I will second the vote for Forecastfox. Having the weather on the bottom of the browser window is great too.

Re: Fire Fox

I have used Firefox since it first came out and do most of my general browsing with it, I have to use IE for work since all of the OEM's I deal with are of course in bed with mickysoft. I have the weather channel add in on the top bar of the browser, where file, edit view, etc are located.
Thunderbird is a very good email program, but, if you use a Blackberry and want to sync it and your email you have to use Outlook.

Yes.:(

I've used Outlook for the past two years because I had a Palm Treo and now a Blackberry. I use it for my Email, Calendar, Notes, and Tasks. I used Thunderbird on my last job when I didn't have a PDA. I would probably still use it at home, but I have Gmail now.

Thunderbird is great if it fits your needs. And I'm keeping an eye open just in case it "learns" to sync with Blackberry.
