Hey guys I'm new to outboard motors and these forums. I have a 115 evinrude motor around 84 or 85 model. I orignally took the boat to have the carbs cleaned but found out it needed a stator and a coil pack(used another name, again im a noob here)I took it out and it still would run right, idled fine to me but would'nt run when engaged. Took it back he told that the coil pack went out again on the same side, 7 weeks later( waiting on warranty department to send new one) he now tells me he still can't get it to fire on one side. He said he thinks it maybe the timing base and he was running out of options. Said it would cost another 200.00 for it plus labor..... My question is Does any of this sound right? Or am I possibly being taken for a ride?

Re: Firing Problem

I am positive there is a method for TESTING these items before changing parts. A good engineer would TEST with a meter. Then decide what needed changing.

I think you have a parts changer, not an engineer.

No it doesn't sound right, he's guessing and throwing parts at it with you paying. Thats not a mechanic.

Heres a course most of us choose.
Order the factory service book.
www.outboardbooks.com

Buy a $30 compression guage,
a $12 adjustable spark tester (auto store)

and a DVA adapter for a multimeter.
DVA adapter $25.
http://www.usatoolwarehouse.com/usatoolwarehouse/ESI-640.html

You need the DVA to test the ignition components.

With the manual and these cheap tools you can zero in on any problem.
You've already spent more than it would have cost to fix in the first place.

You can get lots of expert guidance here,
not to mention save yourself a ton of grief and money.;)
