First boat and kids want to wake board

We've recently bought our first boat (Sea Ray 185 Sport with a 190 hp 4.3 Mercruiser with wake board tower).
We've just been cruising and tubing with it so far, but my kids want to try wake boarding.
My son is 12 and my daughter is 8. Both are athletic/fit for their age and size, but I'm interested in gettin any advice about whether they are too young, what to look for, and whether they could be expected to even get up out of the water (I'm not sure I could).
Any thoughts are appreciated.

8 is plenty old. Just make sure you buy board(s) that are appropriate to their size/weight

Re: First boat and kids want to wake board

I have kids same age. 12 & 11 yr old got frustrated getting up and at best have 15 seconds of wakeboarding before wipeout. Work in progress. 8 yr old doesn't have the strength yet.

But, I put them on a kneeboard and they are digging that this year! They will go kneeboarding for 5-6 hrs in the day then get home and they are wiped out tired. Good physical exercise!

Let them try wakeboard with kneeboard as an alternative.

Also let them watch youtube instruction videos so they can see what they are supposed to do. When they started kneeboarding they just thought it was a ride behind the boat. youtube showed them how to do circle tricks and then the kids REALLY enjoyed the sport.

I bet your athletic kids could handle wakeboarding but maybe they should start off a little easier and less dangerous like with skis or a kneeboard. I have all the water toys and my worse wipeouts have been with the wakeboard, I think it is the speed, standing up and the fact it is so slippery when trying to do tricks that factor into the hurt ratio. You can still get messed up on the other toys but I think they are more forgiving.

Hi,

My son and niece wakeboard. They are 14 and 9 Actually of the watersports. I would venture to say that the speed and high surface area of the wakeboard makes it easier on the body than most things.. I have done most myself and find wakeboarding gentler on me than the others. I think jeeps is right suggesting that board size and keeping a nice low speed while learning is the most critical thing. Even guys riding forever only go 18 to 24 mph.. That's pretty mild.

Find someone that has experience and let them instruct you how to pull a wakeboarder in addition to how to get up on the board. The boat driver is the most important part of the operation IMO.

Plenty old enough, just pull them slow, around 12 mph if possible for a while. If they can't get it, tube for a while to give them a break and then try again later. The hardest part is getting up, after that it'll be easy.

Re: First boat and kids want to wake board

We started our kids younger and this year our 5 year old will make the transition for skiing to wakeboarding.

As noted, you don't have to go very fast when they're starting. When they're young and light it doesn't take much at all to get them up. If you keep it slow the falls don't hurt as much. Getting up comes down to technique. I find beginners tend to want to pull themselves out of the water which tends to lead to a face plant. If you search youtube there are plenty examples of how to get out of the water. Here's one - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9qWJu0Vrpw&feature=related. The video excerpt is from a video series called The Book. It's worthwhile to get as it goes through everything from getting started to more advanced tricks. Once they're up they'll also want to make sure they have a proper posture (leaning back rather than forward). Note that the arms of the person remain straight when they're getting up and it's the legs that are used to push the person up after the board is starting to plane on top of the water.

You'll also need to determine if they're regular or goofy foot (i.e. which foot will go forward). You can use this method if they don't already know:
"Stand "at ease", arms at your side, and have someone push you from behind right in the middle of your back. If you put your right foot out first you're goofy. Left foot you're regular."

In terms of getting a board, the size is determined by their weight. Here's a chart you can use - http://www.evo.com/how-to-choose-a-wakeboard-and-wakeboard-size-chart.aspx. You might be able to get a board/binding set that can be used for both of them. For a rope, you'll want to avoid using a ski rope (those stretch vs a wakeboard rope that doesn't). It won't matter so much for just learning, but once they start looking at getting some air, you don't want a rope that is springy like a ski rope.

getting up is easier for girls, women, and younger boys. the older/stronger someone gets the more the person will try to use those muscles doing the wrong things. wakeboarding is generally about following the path of least resistance. women and girls normally pop right up while dad and the older brothers wear themselves out trying to wrestle the boat.

i agree that a good driver is important. you don't pull a wakeboarder like you do a skier. you definitely don't want to go as fast. falling at high speeds on a board can be really painful.

you might try renting equipment for the first outing. nothing can ruin a day like bad fitting equipment. the folks at the shop will have a good selection and should be able to help with the right sizes. most sports equipment places near the water will rent boards and bindings. even boat dealers usually have a pro shop that rents.

as everyone has said its really about the driver. Teaching my friends to wakeboard we always told them to act like they were getting up from sitting on the toilet, as most can attest a fairly easy action that as many people have said is to let the boat do the work and stay slow for the little guys :)
