So, for my senior project a good friend of mine and me are buying and restoring an old runabout. Its a 1968 with a 80 hp Evinrude. We have been looking for a boat under $400 for a month now, and after being to cautious and loosing too many good leads we finally found a boat. We we and checked it out today and are picking it up tomorrow. I'll post some of the pics that were on the Craigslist ad. This is both of our first boat projects so im glad i found this site as a great resource.

Ok, so what do you want to do with her? I see from your other post you are wanting to build a bench seat for the back. I am going to be doing the same for my runabout as well. I will be more than happy to share my experience with you as I go. I purchased a sewing machine and my vinyl. Have NOT purchased the foam yet and have NOT built the bench seat yet. That will be coming in the next month or so. What is your color scheme going to be? Does your motor run? Wish mine were bigger, I only have a 40 hp on mine.

Keep us posted on your progress

I'm just sayin...:D

Re: First Boat Project

We are going with a red, white and blue theme(American boat and motor). We are going to just buff the hull but are going to paint the top red(possibly two white stripes on the bow) then blue marine carpet on the deck and inersides, then the bench is going to be white vinyl, but the two front seats we are buying since it came with two swivel pedesels and those are white and blue vinyl. We may consider trying to do the two tone (white and blue ) on the bench we make but im worried the blue on the seats and bench wont match, so i might buy the front seats first thewn order a sample of the blue vinyl. Also, we are going to try and make compartments in the bench for the battrey and gas tank(s).

As far as the outboard goes, he sold it as it works, but the carb needs to be cleaned. we havent stared it yet since neither one of us has a marrine battery. So im going to try and use a car battery some time this week to make sure it runs. if it doesnt, im going to go back and get some sort of compensation. Regardless, im going to rebuild the carb and buy the book "Cheap Outboard" to tune it up.

Re: First Boat Project

There is Lots of help in the Outboard section of the forum for your motor if you have issues and there are LOTS of places to get parts. Those old motors are pretty easy to work on. You and your friend should not have any problems getting her runnin

I'm just sayin...:D

Ya, it seems like every question has been asked on here, haha.

So today i cleaned up the gas tank and buffed out a spot using some Turtle Wax rubbing compound to see what it will look like (im borrowing a buffer when it comes time to actually do it) Then tonight my partner is coming over to draw out some definite plans ans such.

Welcome to the fourms.
Don't forget that you need a tank or a hose hooked up and running when cranking and running your motor. Get a good service manual. Good Luck with the project and watch out the Boat Bug Bites you'll find yourself owning more the one.

When you say a hose do you mean like a garden hose? I'm more familiar with jet skis and we have a flush kit on them where you hook up a garden hose to it so that water runs through the system while starting it on land. So like that?

And ya, i would probably love to get another but i had a hard time getting my dad to let me put even this one in his yard, haha.

Yes they sell ear muffs that your garden hose hooks to then slip over the water intake on your lower unit. Don't be showing off and over reving it either. It's going to sound cool with the exhaust out off the water but you can do damage. Check your local libary for a manual if they don't have one they can get it for you.

Re: First Boat Project

So, we have decided to use rustoleum marine top coat and primer for the paint. Just cant beat the price. Does anyone have experience using rustoleum on boats?
