Looking to buy my first boat. Looked at 2009 Bayliner 205 BR, new, non-current. Never been in water. From dealer showroom. Standard features with engine upgrade to 220 M MPI/A1 4.3l carb compliant. Other upgrades: bimini top, depth finder, bow and helm covers, also snap in carpet. Comes with trailer. Dealer wants 27,992.00. Is this boat worth price. Any opinions helpful. Thanks!

Re: first boat purchase

How much of a discount is it from the 2010 model? Then that may give you a good indication if the price is right. Remember, the dealer is probably drooling about finally getting rid of a boat thats been in his showroom for 2 years. Beat him up a little. Bayliner prices will probably be pretty attractive compared to other companies with a similar model.

What are your goals with the boat? Power sports, cruising etc... thats what you have to keep in mind to make sure there is something not missing as far as features and upgrades to the boat. I have a 4.3l in my 18 foot larson and love it. Definitely enough of juice for me and it should be just fine for the 205.

You're also buying brand new. To me, brand new is the way to go. Youre not buying someone else problems. Turn the key and go boating (well....theres a little more to it than that)

Do you have a tow vehicle to get it off lot, where are you storing/mooring? Think all of these questions and if this boat still makes sense and fits your need...GO FOR IT!!!

Re: first boat purchase

Thanks for reply, I have a truck to pull trailer. The MSRP is 35,000. The 2010 is same, but would'nt know walking out door price as they don't have the exact same boat for 2010 in stock. Just wondering if most 20 foot new boats go for 30000 plus in same category. Basically going to be used for family fun on bay and river, skiing and fishing.

I would find someplace that has the 2010 model in stock..... find out if any changes were made....I would beat either dealer up if I were you.....either would be itching to make a sale....

I would tell the dealer you want to see his invoice and that you'd pay $500 over invoice and not a penny more. See how bad he really wants to sell the boat.

Re: first boat purchase

Last year we paid $500 less than that for our Bayliner 245 Bowrider. Much bigger overall, 5.7 merc, trailer and everything else you list. I think paying the same thing for a 20'er would cause me to look around some more.

Check out Sea Ray, they have a great reputation and their re-sale is better. There are a lot of great used boats out there and you would save a lot of money.

OMG - I thought i was the only one on this forum that thought this way!! :)

I agree, buy brand new, especially as your first boat. No hidden problems, and if there are, warranty!

I paid about $33k for my 2008 23' yamaha - so perhaps the price is a little high - but I dont know much about bayliners.

Sometimes convenience and local post-sale support are more important than the price if its only a few hundred. . . it's all about how YOU feel the deal is.

Dunno where you are, but I'm in Ontario Canada, the list for my boat was something near $36K, I paid $28K out the door. It was also on the showroom floor for two years before I bought it last year. Seems a bit high to me for yours, considering the original price. That said, I dunno what the mark-up is like on Bayliners.

Re: first boat purchase

If you are looking for opinions here is mine: I like the fact it has the MPI vs the carb 4.3 and to me snap in carpet is non negotiable. On the flip side, a 28k nearly new boat with very few hours, proven to be sea worthy would be my choice. Many times they have an extended engine warranty already purchased and can be simply transferred to you. The same reason I wouldn't buy a new Ford for 30k when I can get a one year old premium brand car for the same or less. Noone seems to have mentioned that Bayliner is the value brand not a premium brand. Why not get more for less? Also, I have noticed that at least at the end of the season around my parts here in MN the new 20footers of some brands actually are less money than the 18.5 footers due to supply and demand. Of course the 20 footers are more expensive but less folks buy them and when they have to clear them out they mark them down. When I buy anything I am always happy I got a deal on it and simultaneously can't believe that someone actually made the decision to buy it new. I am glad they did so I could scoop it up cheap a few years old but still can't get the logic. Also, at least here in Minnesota you don't pay sales tax which is somewhere over 7% (I have lost track) on used boats from private parties or brokered boats. You only pay it on the value of the trailer. On your purchase that is around $2,000 of savings. For full disclosure I also own a Bayliner amongst my boats.
