Hello everyone,

Just bought my first boat, and couldn't be happier. Wondering if a specific type of sealant I have is right for the job. The precise sealant name is:
"One Part Polyether Urethane Sealant/Adhesive". It actually says on the product that it will adhere to fiberglass and is safe to use on marine projects above the water line. I guess my only real concern is that it didn't really come from a major marine supply store (i.e. west marine). I plan on using it for resealing deck hardware, re bedding the port lights and the haul-to-deck joint. Any help, comments or input is greatly appreciated. I got this boat real cheap and it looks like it hasn't been maintained properly, so i just want to do it right the first time.

Thanks for your help,
Jesse

Got a brand name on that sealant? One particular high quality brand is sold by the West Marine type stores.....and Home Depot. Check out what they sell here at iboats.

Over the years I have used most brands/variants of marine sealant That's commonly available... 3M, Sikkaflex, Boatlife... etc They all work ok.

My favorite marine sealant is 3M 101. Thicker, more flexible, lasts a long time and finishes out very smooth with a bit of mineral spirits on a finge. Costs a few bucks more.

If you want an adhesive/sealant (structural properties) I recommend 3M 4200 or 5200. 5200 has pretty serious adhesive properties, so don't use it on parts that you want to remove periodically, it's a bugger to make it let go.

There are a number of articles on the web about how to do this right. One key element is not fully tightening the hardware until the sealant sets up to form a gasket under the part being bedded.

I'm a true believer in the 3M 5200 or nearly any of their sealant products. They do a good job of standing up to harsh enviroments. Just as an example; I used the 3M 5200 and J-B Weld on the lower case of my kids Honda 300 Quad. Thing was leaking from both areas like you wouldn't believe and I was told the 3M would work better than J-B weld with a good clean surface. So I used both, because I had always appreaciated J-B Weld. Within a couple of rides that J-B Weld patched area was leaking Oil again, however, it's been a year and the area patched with the 3M 5200 hasn't leaked at all. Says something about the 3M product.

For me 3M 5200 has stood the test of "below the waterline" in salt. I won't
use anything else. It does take a week to fully set up.
