I have picked up my first boat to restore for $100. It is a tri hull. I am not sure the make and model but it was cheap and I wanted a project. I did know the condition before I bought it and really want to see it through and learn along the way. So here are some questions and pictures to go with them.

First off all wood is rotted on this thing. So of course the first step is to replace the transom and the stringers. I am going to go with the standard wood and fiber glass.

The cap is rotted pretty bad at the transom and I am wondering if its possible to repair this or is it junk?

Also for the stringers they go under a fiber glass piece that is at the port of the boat. I am curious can I cut this to get to the rest of the stringer or will it be to hard to reform this part?

I am assuming that when I remove the cap it will give me access to the stringers at the front of the boat.

Also last question is, what is the material that goes on top of the fiberglass that makes up the hull of the boat. To me it resembles an enamel but I am curious what to look for to repair the fiberglass on the transom.

Sorry for all the newb questions. I am researching everything on this forum and youtube as we speak lol

Welcome to iBoats!

Your pics did not post. Best way is to use a free Photobucket account ans use the IMG Code.

The finish coat is called GelCoat!

Welcome to iboats.

Wow, you have allot of work ahead.

Yes the hull will have to be uncapped and the cap set aside. The stringers need replacing, transom and lots of fiberglass and grinding are in your future.

I don't see seats or a motor and I will randomly guess that a repair (not a full restoration) and additin of a motor will be in the THOUSAND$ of dollars. I will just warn you of that up front.

However if you wish to continue we have all the supplies you will need here in iboats Boat Paint, Repair & Maintenance - Boat Carpet, Fiberglass Repair, Antifouling and that "stuff" on the final fish can be either gelcoat Boat Gel Coat Repair or paint Boat Paint & Varnish

I don't see a trailer??? Or a motor? DO you have them or no?

no trailer and no motor. Cant expect too much for $100 lol. I know its an ambitious project and that's exactly something what I wanted. Something to come close to building a boat from scratch. As I am sure you will agree this is pretty darn close. Taking the tasks that I have infront of me, would you consider this a manageable project?

Re: First boat restoration

I just got back in from doing a bit of sanding before the rain hits. I got a good portion of the stringers removed and most of the excess glass that encases the stringers. Is it necessary to remove the excess fiber glass from the hull? Or do you just smooth it down?
