Well I just bought a 78 mfg with a 78 115 Evinrude, it had great compression at 115 in each cylinder being it was rebuilt a few years ago and a new lower unit in 99. I take it for a first ride with a buddy, I got about a mine out or so and the temp alarm goes off, I let it sit for a but run it again for a few seconds and the alarm still went off, waited 5 mins and alarm was off and it ran fine back to the dock. (Maybe just ell grass), but when I went to dock it stalled out when I went to turn it around to fit in my space, and refused to start. I pulled the lower unit and inspected the water pump, and cleaned it up, and dropped it back in the water and it started up fine. Then my second trip a few days later, I take it for a longer ride to a beach; all went fine, until we went to leave the motor refused to start. I found a fuel leak in the motor and some one there helped me fix it, but it wouldn’t start right up after I fixed it, even with starter fluid but I continued to try after as break, b/c maybe I just flooded it and it started after a while. Now I went to take it out today, and while I was running it for a little while it stalled out but started right back up, then I put it in gear and started down the canal about 20 feet down it stalled out and would not start. I am running this off portable tanks by the way, and the boat was stored for 2 years or so before I bought it. I realized now after reading the portable tanks need to be vented when being used that I did not have it vented. Does anyone think that that may have just been the problem, or maybe the carbs need to rebuilt or have any other advice?

Sorry for the lengthy post and thanks for reading

Thanks from a new boater
~Steve
TheYolker@aol.com

If it has been sitting, the carbs need attention. The tank venting is a must, as you found out.

By the way, lose the starting fluid. It will ruin that engine in a heartbeat.

I sprayed some carb cleaner in there, should I pull off the carbs and attempt a rebuild or take apart and clean? I am pretty good with cars, is it easy enough to do, and what’s a good place to get parts or any local boat shop will do?

Thanks

The carbs are cinch to rebuild, especially if you have done automotive. Just don't change any adjustments.

They have to come apart to do a good cleaning/rebuild.

It is pretty staight forward, but it would be a good idea to get a manual first, and read through the process a few times, before you start to pull anything apart.

Also, as has been mentioned on here before, if it's your first time taking anything from your motor apart, it helps to have a digital camera and to take several pictures of how everything looked together and adjusted (presumably properly) as you take it apart. You know, just in case -- don't want any parts left over :D .

just a comment on the tank venting... there's no vent to manually open on your tanks. There is a pin that gets pushed in (= opens vent) when you connect the hose to the tank. They can sometimes clog etc, but if you have the same prob with both tanks, and if you haven't noticed your primer bulb going flat, or that there is vacuum in the tank when you open the cap... then your problem lies elsewhere. As mentioned, carbs are suspect when it's been sitting.

I'd check compression again first. You had an overheat situation more than once, and have probably been running it lean (partially clogged carbs). Hopefully no major damage was done, the compression test will confirm that the internals are still OK.

A manual is a must (you'll use it as long as you own the motor).

that's my $.02, good luck.

Brent

Hmm BF - you mentioned "..if you haven't noticed your primer bulb going flat..."

One pumped, and hard, and the engine runs - it should hard the entire time right? If not would that point to a problem with the tank/hose/connector? If so I need to check them on my prject.

the bulb doesn't really stay "hard" when you run the motor... when you first pump it up, it fills the carb bowl. The float/needle closes and this makes pressure and is what causes the bulb to feel firm (you are pumping against the closed needle valve). If your needles stuck, you can keep pumping and gas flows out of the carb (bulb never gets firmer). When you're actually running it, gas is being sucked through the fuel line, so the bulb should be full of fuel, but won't be pressurized ("hard")like when you first prime it.

If the vent is clogged, the fuel pump makes a vacuum and the primer bulb might actually flatten out. If you opened the gas cap, it would make a big swoosh as the air goes in (and the primer would pop round again).

Make sense?

Brent

Spent half of last summer trying to figure out what my engine's problem was. Turns out I didn't loosen the cap of fuel tank to vent. Went boating with my grandfather for years with this engine and I don't remember him ever telling me to open vent!

Steve - Replace the water pump and thermostats whether you think they need them or not unless you are sure that they have been replaced in the past two years. You might also change the gear oil (new gaskets on the fill & drain plug) plus a new set of plugs.

I went to replace the water pump, I brought it to a marine place and they looked at it and said they would be stealing my money if they sold me one, they said it looks great and i don’t need one.

ToolMaster, when the dealer looked at it.... are you referring to the actual waterpump? You took the old one out of the lower unit and showed it to the dealer?

Let them steal your money. You can't tell much about the performance of a water pump by looking at it.

Mine looked fine after three to four years also. But.... it had a definate "set" in it. Slowly reducing water flow. I felt funny replacing it... but its just too important not to. After several years.... especially in salt water and getting stuck in sandbars now and then... if you already have it apart you can replace the impeller only if you like. Not too expensive.

You cant see a thin coat of warnish inside the jets, reducing the very small orifices. Remove the plastic parts, soak them in carb cleaner over night, grab a pair of glasses and blow everything thru with compressed air. Now you know they are clean.

Well I have a few questions here; in the picture I posted here just I highlighted the parts im talking about.
http://hometown.aol.com/theyolker/carb2.jpg
there are these s screws on the side then a jet I guess, a brass like screw with a hole through it then behind that it looks like a part form the kit I got (I see all these parts and not sure where all of them go), but also those round domes it looks like I got new ones of them too, but I don’t know how they would come off

Thanks for the help
~Steve
