Re: First boat with big problem

Just looked online and shows the elbow to manifold plate like the one I have and the gaskets have three openings for the jackets, yet it does not look like it is supposed to flow through.
If that is true it looks like previous owner or somebody took the elbow off and when putting back on put the plate on wrong side allowing coolant to flow through the front jacket and escape through the exhaust.
Anyone could confirm this would be appreciated.

470's with a serial number 4886620 and above use a non-vented seperation plate...flow through the 3 smaller passages should be blocked.

Re: First boat with big problem

Ya you guys are correct. I knew it didnt look right, when I got the gaskets from the parts store the guy brought up the schematic and whoever monkeyed with it before put the blocking plate on wrong side which dump all my coolant

So after i fixed that and top off my coolant and it never went down. So one issue down but still overheated and noticed this time that the riser was hissing.

Pulled it back out of the water this morning and will pull the lower drive out and replace the impeller. Besides the impeller kit w/ the keys is there anything else I should check or replace while I have it off?

Hoping after replacing the impeller and 4" exchanger will be able to enjoy it even for a short time.

So just pulled lower drive and removed the impeller, it is pretty trashed and brittle.

Was wondering though from others experience if it looks bad enough that it wouldn't flow through system?

That impeller is about as useless as telling the cop that all those empty beer cans were in the car when you bought it!

Your biggest concern needs to be 'where' the missing pieces have ended up.... Follow the water flow path from the leg, it goes to the voltage regulator, and then into the heat exchanger. Since you have a new exchanger on the way, just make sure that there are no pieces lodged in the voltage regulator pipe.

That was a nice analogy.

I found pretty much most of it where the water comes into the lower unit. Was just all sitting in the bottom of it.

I have most of it put together but have another question.
I am at the point where i put the impeller and the base assy on. The impeller is larger the the hole for the base. Are you supposed to bend it in the opening or did somehow I get the wrong part?

These other guys are totally "on" to your issues with this, but the quick answer is, "Yes" the impeller blades are to be bent over. The trick then is to get them bent the correct way. I'm sure they will chime in and tell you which way, as your old impeller was clearly NOT going to give you any clues. :)

Good luck! You're getting it!!!! Soon enough, Grasshopper, you will be shredding those waters!

You position the impeller on the shaft...bring the base down to it...and while rotating the shaft clockwise (looking down), push the base over the impeller. The blades will curve into the base. Some people use a little dish soap on the impeller blades, some use a spray like WD-40, etc. I never use anything.

Perfect should be able to finish it up now.

Re: First boat with big problem

I have a Volvo which is much easier to change the impeller ;), but I will share with you what I was told and I have changed quite a few. My first mechanic (from my old Volvo) told me it doesn't matter if you bend the blades the right way or not - just get it all 'in there'. Within about 1/20th of a second from the time you turn the key, the blades will all be going in the right direction!

Yes Impeller blades need to go right direction on MC. On a volvo they will align themselves.

MC instructions you got are right clockwise from top. Use a little grease to keep the key in place on the vertical drive shaft if needed.

Look at housing, if any signs of melted plastic replace. Top and Bottom housing can both get "toasted".

You will NEED to find ALL the little pieces of your old impeller. IMPORTANT. They can go and hide in bad places.

Re: First boat with big problem

***Update***

Well tested it in driveway after all coolant fixes and seemed good.
Put it back in water last night and never went above 150 on gauge, also was feeling the heat exchanger and noticed was pretty cool to the touch.
So I feel my coolant issues are good to go.

Thanks to everyone who helped me through this issue.

Now the bad news.
After a few minutes every time I opened it up would stall out die.
Seemed to start back up but soon as I put it in gear would go for a couple seconds and stall out again.
I know of the adults only section with the fixes as will going back to boat after work and starting on this new issue.

Just wanted to update the progress at this point.
