hello jason, <br /><br />-you say your engine was smoking, this could be the result of the last owner not winterizing, or just the fact that it hasnt been run in a while.<br />if its nothing serious then it should stop smoking after a while.<br /><br />-as for the oil on the lower half, you should drain the gearcase oil (plug should be on the very bottom of lower unit), if you see the presence of water(oil is clumpy or white) you have a bad seal somwhere. If you want to fix it yourself, you need to obtain an owners manual <br /><br />-i must warn you, it can be tricky to service the lower half yourself, but it is much better then the high prices of a shop. if you do get a manual, make sure to do it step-by-step. <br /><br />Good Luck and happy boating
