Re: First Coat Of Awl Grip

Thom, We have applied the first coat of 545 Sunday with a sprayer and followed the 1:1 mix ratio of primer and hardener. The can of reducer says, "reducer may not be nessessary". The mix of 545 and catalyst was pretty thin without reducer but added a little bit anyway. The results were perfect. The primer sprayed and covered very well. No runs, no drips, no errors. I cannot under stand why some of the instructions say to thin soo much??

Your thoughts?

Jim

Re: First Coat Of Awl Grip

Speakrdude,

Its hard for me to say because I didn't spray, I used a roller for all of it other than just a little bit of hard to reach stuff I did with a Preval sprayer, but using brushing/roller reducer. In general I tried it from very little reducer added to a lot of reducer added and to be honest with you it got better as it got thinner. I don't think that tells you much though because I'm guessing that spray applicaiton and reducer act a lot differently than roller's counterparts do. For whatever its worth someone told me that they worked at a boat yard that did roller applications of this stuff and they had an interesting way of doing the primer. As I understood it what they did was take a crew and apply a coat by roller all the way around the boat. By the time they got back to the starting point it would have skinned over and they just proceeded to put a second coat right on top of the first. I was told they put on 3 coats that way. Then they came back a day or two later and sanded it then went straight to the color coat. That is how I'm goin to do my top half next year. Can't hurt to try.

Back to your question, when it came to the color coat Awl Grip was recommending something like 33%~40% and It worked best for me if I west straight to the maximum and then added just a little bit as I went along. Once again though, the roller stuff may act a lot differently than sprayed juice will.

Thom

Thom
