Setup: OMC 2.3 Cobra. Adjusted cable using the original manual and special adjustment tool. Got to the launch today, shifted in reverse fine, shifted to the nutral, boat still in reverse, shifted in forward, drive goes in nuetral moving shifter forward few inches gets the forward gears engaged, but the hole boats shakes when gears engage and clunk clunk clunk.... pulled boat on the trailer right away, hope my gears are still in pieces. Now, what would cause that? Cable adjusted a week ago.. Is my lower unit screwed?

Does it shift like that when on muffs? I had a similar issue and I had 2 problems.

1. the trunion on the cable at the engine was out of adjustment. In my case it was too far forward. I move it back a few turns at a time until neutral was neutral, and it shifted in and out of gear properly.

2. My ESA wasn't working. After I unplugged it and fiddled around with it until it worked. I think it was a ground problem.

This is a Stringer thread. It'd be a good idea for you to start a different/new post.

Adjusted second, top cable on the turnion (with red thingy), seems that this solved the issue with forward gear, at least on muffs it works fine. It felt like there was not enough movement to make shifter cable to move all the way for some reason.

nope, not that. The trunion is the part of the lower shift cable that is held in with the cotter pin. I can't see from your pic where it is, but I thought I adjusted mine correctly and it didn't work. I would select reverse and it would go, then when I selected neutral the drive was still in reverse. I selected forward and it would shift into forward just before the throttle started to advance. I took the cotter pin out and threaded the trunion toward the stern until it shifter correctly. I actually did this with the engine off and my son turning the prop by hand. Then verified with the engine running. You may have accomplished the same thing with the shift cable adjustment, I don't know. I had zero shifting problems with the boat all last summer.

Once the lower shift cable is adjusted properly, you need to determine if the shifter cable from the shifter to the engine is adjusted properly.. there is really only one spot for the trunnion barrel of the lower shift cable the rest of the adjustments have to be made on the shifter cables... here are some good PDFs that show how it's done

Did you take the drive off and clean the bellcrank area?
You adjust the shift lever on the drive?? What all did you adjust?
