Hi All, new to this forum but have read a bunch of the threads from this section and love the stories and felt it time to share. I did a renovation on a 1989 Sunbird spl194 with a 90 hp mercury but I will post that info in the resoration section. Wanted to share my maiden voyage. Now this is my first boat EVER and I am 55 yeras old. Got the boat for free and on July 5th backed it in my driveway. Did all the renovation and set out on Sunday August 19th in the Lynn Mass harbor with my fiance'. Launch went like clock work. Should have since I did it 100 times in my head and practiced driving the trailer in the local school parking lot. So out we go and fiind a nice place and have lunch, set anchor..again just like I planned. Go to start and flood the motor. Called my neighbor who comes over with starting fluid, we get it going and start to head in. Choppy but not bad, hit a couple of waves side to side and I go down like I got shot in the leg. Blew out the tendon that holds the knee cap in place....ouch. Thank god the neighbor is still with us. As I went down I cut the throttle and they got him in my boat and his daughter in his boat and in we went (Knee cap up in my thigh). Got in and the ambulance is waiting but they can not get me out of the boat so call fire dept and they get me out and into ambulance....surgery...recovery.........STINKS. no more boating this year (i think, he...he).
Thanks all for stories and information.

Re: First Day

OUCH!!!! What a great introduction post, even though it sounds like you had to go through a lot of pain to make it happen, lol. Hope this doesn't sour your stomach on boating; it wasn't the boat's fault!

Seriously, though, I had a friend that separated his kneecap from the rest of his leg and I was there when it happened. NEver seen a person in more pain than that (looked horrible too). Glad to hear you're on the road to recovery and hopefully it will heal enough to at least get 1 or 2 more trips out. You know the rule around here, however, if you've spent any amount of time.....PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN!

Welcome to iboats!!

Welcome to iboats!

Sorry that your first post was about such a terrible injury. But I don't see that it deserves to be in this forum area; nothing stupid here.

You DO have a kill switch and had the lanyard attached, I hope. If not I strongly recommend you do so in the future.

Best of luck with your recovery.

Look on the bright side; the boat did well, and those don't heal without money!

Re: First Day

sorry to hear about your knee. As a separate note, do not use starter fluid in a 2 stroke motor. It washes the lubrication and promotes wear in your engine.

OUCH! Actually, ouch doesn't seem to cover having your kneecap relocated to your thigh.

Get better soon
