Great info and advice. I have to agree also. I have the Ruger Mark II bull barrel and will have to say that gun is one of the most accurate and consistant shooting guns I have ever owned. Always trouble free. Also have a single action Colt revolver my grandfather left me. Sweet little gun too.

I bought one of my sons a Mark II w/bull barrel in the '80s. It never was a good shooter. Guess we just got a bad one. Not knocking Ruger, I own a few.

My dad has a .22 revolver 9 shot. Had it for probably 40 years. Dont know what brand.<br /><br />The 9 shots gives you more targets before re-loading.<br /><br />ken

I've got a 9-shot Sears JC Higgins made by S&W.

That was my first handgun, I have carried it since 1974 I wouldnt take for it, Uncountable rounds fired through it and still as accurate as when it was new.

Here's an excellent looking Ruger Single Six on gunbroker.com. Bid right now is at $205.00. It has 2 cylinders, regular, and .22mag. Only thing, you have to make arrangements with a local dealer or someone who has a FFL and have it shipped to them.<br /><br />Single-actions are, arguably, the safest. Unlike double-actions and auto-loaders, you can't inadvertently pull the trigger and fire it. It must first be cocked manually. At that point, they're all equal.<br />

Tomorrow I'll be paying a visit to the local PD to obtain a purchase permit. Then on Saturday, it's off to the gun shop.

The Ruger single six is great! I love being able to switch to 22 Mag with the other cylinder. I also have the 22 Semi auto which is much louder for some reason.

Hey JRJ, I have a Mark II, do you have jamming problems?<br />If I don't shoot mini mag's, my gun will jam. Took it to a local gun smith to check it out, he said, sorry, shoot mini mag's.<br /><br />I just got the Walther 22 semi. I love this gun. Take over the ruger any day.<br /><br />Spud

Wouldn't know what to recommend. Our government prefers that the law abiding citizens kill each other off with chainsaws, axes, hammers or whatever is handy. If you are a criminal here, then you are exempt from registering any guns you might have!!!

Spud, I don't remember a funtion problem, just didn't print well. Poor grouping. I haven't talked to my son about the MarkII in a long time. He bought himself a Browning 22 and says its a good shooter. I know what you mean about not all ammo working well in auto-loaders.

Dont know anything about the other guns, but you wont go wrong with that Ruger Single Six! That one I do know about. My fishing/hunting partner owns one.<br />What a sweet gun to shoot.<br />For plinking/target shooting or hunting in a .22 cal its the only way to go. <br />Two of my .22 cal revolver's are double action, but I always shoot them as single action.<br />A lot of good info here.<br />Lets see some pics :)

You convertable ruger shooters did you ever notice that one cyl is more accurate than the other. I have heard thier is .001" difference in the bore size of the 22 verses the 22mg. I have noticed that on a friends revolver, His wasnt very accurate with the mag cyl installed. so I never bought one. I personally enjoy shooting 38specials in my 357s as I reload and cast my bullits its cheap shooting, but thats another thread.

Re: First Handgun Advice - 22 Cal - UPDATE

There's no dif in the bore size, somebody just made that up. With a revolver the major factor in determining accuracy is the alignment of the cylinder to the bore. If one cylinder is out of alignment it won't shoot straight. The muzzle being damaged or not square is secondary, but important. With the Mark II, which is of blowback design, the major factors are the muzzle condition and the cleanliness of the action. If you have to use hi-power ammo to make it function then there are other problems. One such can be that someone altered or changed the main spring, or another problem is that there is simply a machining problem, which with Ruger is very rare. I believe the .22 autoloader has been in production for nearly 50 years and still going strong. ;)

I am now the proud owner of a Ruger Single Six. I purchased the hunter model (7 1/2" barrel, with scope rings, stainless steel) chambered for .22 LR/.22WMF.<br />A big thanks to everyone on the board for your advice.

If you post about a new gun, boat, wife, etc., without posting pics, there is a 5 dollar fine! :D <br />And since it is a gun, you must also post a range report. Again, 5 dolar fine for not doing so.
