I picked up a 67' Starcraft fiberglass boat with a 67' Mercury 650 this December and I'm finally taking it out to the lake on Saturday. The serial number for the motor is #2216585 or #2210585 and I want to make sure the correct fuel:eek:il mixture was 50:1. Any recommendations on which 2 cycle oil to use? Also I planned to use Stabil Marine since most of our fuel has ethanol in it (Is this a good idea)?

The other thing I wanted to do was put together a small toolbox in case something happened on the water. What size recommendations for wrenchs should I take? I'm assuming they are all metric nuts on the Mercury? Any other tools you would suggests to add for the water?

So far I've put the engine on muffs and it has started on the first crank everytime so I hope I don't have problems ::knock on wood::

How often should I change the lower end grease? Is it a pretty simple process? I would consider myself an above average weekend warrior mechanic.

Any other tips first a first time Outboard owner would be much appreciated.

Thanks for all the help in advance.

any two cycle oil rated TCW-III is fine you don't need to buy expensive oil, walmart is just fine. I use seafoam, and stabil marine sometimes, others use lots of stuff or nothing, your choice. I doubt any of the nuts and bolts are metric. My '79 is all SAE. I have a small craftsman general tool box always on board. Fits most everything but the prop nut, and I take that size deep socket with me and I have a spare prop on board. I change the lower unit oil every fall when I store it, and check to see its noy milky with water once or twice during the season. It's easy to change, two screws, one on the bottom and one on the top, lots of videos around with a google search.

Pack these combination wrenchs 5/16-3/8-7/16-1/2" along with a slotted and #2 phillips screwdriver and pair of pliers and you are good to go,no metric on this American engine. Next step, change your impeller.Yes run the additives every other tank full or so.

Thanks for all the information guys. 50:1 is the correct ratio right? Yeah the picture below came out white for some reason but it is somewhat of a green color now. I imagine it use to be blue. I think I got a pretty good deal for the boat $600 and I'm the third owner. The guy I had bought it from has had it for over 20 years.
