Ok, I have read a lot of the posts about the first boat. How about growing up, what was the first outboard that you ever got to use?<br /><br />For me it was a 78 Merc. First got to drive it once I was strong enough to start it. I remember the mornigns i would sit down ther pullin and pullin to get that thing started. Once it did the only time I was back at home was for more gas :) <br /><br />Belchy

Re: First Outboard as a Child

my first was an old air cooled piece of rubbish that had the knack of starting any time you wanted to go anywhere except home, because you could never start that thing when it was time to go, especially if it came up windy or rainy, got a lot of rowing practice back then

The 28hp you can see if you click the little 'man-next-to-house-standing' icon just above.<br />Wasn't worth fixing for any other reason as it sunk and didn't get prompt attention (for 20 years).

Hey Paul! Nice Paint! I had a '72 Chevy Nova the exact same color. My first outboard was a Sears Water Witch 19??

An old Martin 7.5, probably around 1960. It was on the back of a red wooden 14' Penn Yann boat. I got to drive it with my Dad sitting on the seat beside me when I was a very young kid. All I remember about it is the black cowl, the sliding throttle lever on the front of the motor, and the red rubber tiller handle grip...and the absolute thrill that got me hooked for life. Thanks, Dad!

The first one I used was a Water Witch from the 30s that my Dad bought in a basket and used as a training aid to teach me about engines in general and 2 strokes in particular. "We" built it from parts.<br /><br />The first outboard that was mine was a Johnny JW-10. What a sweet little engine!! Still miss it.

my first was a 5hp eska on a 10' sear aluminium. took me two weeks to finally demonstrate to dad I could reliably start it. after that I was all over pascagoula MS. sometimes I could burn 10-15 gallons in a weekend. man those were the days :) :) . dad set me up an account at the city docks so all I had to do was sign for the fuel :) :) . 12 years old, a good dog and all the gas I could burn :)

Re: First Outboard as a Child

Here's a short article I wrote a few years ago, published in the 1000 Islands Chapter AOMCI Newsletter...<br /><br />"True Blue Evinrude<br /><br />Most of us, in all the motors we’ve owned, used, loved, hated, broken and fixed, have one motor that holds a really special<br />place in our memory. Although I am primarily a Merc Nut, I do have room in my collection for aluminum of other colors.<br />Notably, the first motor I ever helped my Dad rebuild (as more than a casual observer) was a 1955 Evinrude 7.5 Fleetwin.<br />I was 12 years old at the time and we turned that basket of parts into a great running little motor. I had been driving our<br />little 12 footer with a 1961 3hp Johnson twin for a couple of seasons and we figured it was time to move up the power<br />ladder a bit. I ran that motor pretty near every day that following summer, putting countless hours on it. My younger<br />brothers all cut their outboard teeth on it, too, and as the years went by and the parental “limit” for power was removed, I still kept returning to that little blue ‘Rude. It started easily, ran quietly, and was enough to plane off with a passenger and pooch.<br />I’ve been known to buzz the neighbors’ docks with a Merc KE7 for an afternoon, but the Evinrude always resumed its position on the transom at the end of the day. <br /><br />Anyway, the summers went on by, I grew up, went to college, brothers went off to armed forces, college, etc. and we moved<br />on to bigger boats, more horsepower, water skis, and families. The ol’ Fleetwin had left it’s last cloud of blue smoke (gotta<br />run them 7.5s rich!) one summer in the early 1990s when one brother was visiting a girl on an island 4 miles from home. He<br />had just left her place for the trip home when BANG! The top rod let go through the crankcase. Not uncommon for these old 7.5s, but heartbreaking none-theless. The motor managed to limp home on the bottom cylinder, daylight showing through the upper crankcase. Even in it’s death throes, it wouldn’t let us down! It was pulled off of the boat one last time and racked in the garage. Over the years the lower unit was scavenged for some project or another, the recoil was given to a neighbor with a similar motor and the carcass was left to collect dust. <br /><br />Flash forward 10 years, and you have the Internet in full bloom, motor parts available at the click of a mouse! I spied a<br />1955 7.5 Evinrude on eBay - described as a parts motor. The hood, and most of the extraneous powerhead parts were<br />missing, but the block and lower unit both looked good. I took a chance and bought it for $20! It took me almost that much<br />to have it shipped! It arrives a week later, and I tear into it. Not only is the block good, but so are the pistons, rods and<br />crankshaft! The “stuck” condition was due to slight rusting of the cylinder walls. A quick honing righted that wrong. <br /><br />To make a very long story short, this summer I got that old 7.5 back together again. I found the original hood buried in a<br />pile of parts in our storage barn, the original mid-section still racked where we had left it all those years ago, and a can full<br />of nuts and bolts. A little hunting around, net surfing and phone calls resulted in the last pieces of the puzzle. Who says you can’t go home again? My 7-year old son can pull start the motor himself and is learning the ropes of operating the throttle, shifting and docking. The motor still has the same sound as 20 years ago, and the smell - well there’s nothing like the smell of a two-stroke in the morning...." <br /><br />Well, that 7-year old son of mine is now 10 and he's got his Boater's Safety Certificate. He's now bugging me as to when he can run the 7.5 by himself, but for now he's buzzing around the bay with a '54 5.5 Johnson (as per his Mother's request because she feels the 7.5 is too fast just yet).<br /><br />- Scott<br />

Re: First Outboard as a Child

I had a 5HP Eska on a 12' jonboat. Never really liked it due to lack of power. Bought a 7.5HP Ted Williams motor, too much power for the jonboat, almost went over backwards a few times, especially when motoring into the wind. Got a 1960 14 crestliner with a '61 40 Lark. Motor had a bad cylinder (expensive lesson on buying used stuff). Had motor repaired, sold it and bought a '59 fat-fifty. Now that was a fun motor, although I darn near sunk a couple of times, due to its weight on that little boat. Sold that rig and bought a 150HP Merc inline 6 w/speedboat. Really like that motor.

Re: First Outboard as a Child

Early 60s Evinrude 3 hp Ducktwin on a 12 foot Lund. Many years of fun. It was super slow compared to my friends' boats, but you know, I never cared. Only problem was when I was turning tight to get away from the dock and jammed my right index finger between the metal dock post (jagged, hammered top) and the tiller handle - almost took off the finger - mom had to sit down when she saw it... brother and I thought it was way cool (turned out OK w/ a few stiches and splint). Dad hung tires off of posts from then on. Now that I'm a father, I have many similar "DOH why didn't I think of that sooner!?" moments

Re: First Outboard as a Child

Mine was a 14' Wolverine (lapstrake) with a Merc 18 ... got it for my birthday in 1955. I don't remember the year for either, but both were used. <br /><br />Before that I ran a 1940 Johnson 2.5 on a 16 ft canoe Dad and I built. I still have both the motor and the canoe and they still look and run like youngsters.<br /><br />Dad wouldn't allow me access to his Lyman Islander back then, but ... it was an inboard and not part of this topic.

Re: First Outboard as a Child

I guess Im a real throw back. My first motor of my own was a 1.5 circa 1940 Evinrude on a brand new red 10ft sharpie built for me in Mexico New York.It was 1949 and I was 6.I once pulled a 32 ft cruiser with it though I found out years later<br /> the owner cheated a little to help me out.The motor fell off and was lost when I was about 7 or 8.The family boat at the time was a circa 1936 thompson with a 47 7.5 Firestone we called stuttering Sam.

First motor I ever ran myself was a 7.5 Johnny from mid 1950's. The first I ever owned was a 9.9 Merc. 1976. I sold it to my friends father in 1978 and it is still going strong.

I had a 1956 Johnson 10 horse on a 1958 14' aluminum boat. What A blast I had. The motor was bullet proof.

Mine was a 1958 Johnson 50 hp V-4 sitting on the back of an 18' Thompson lapstrake (wood). Ran it on the Hudson river between Albany and Kingston. I think this was the first year for the OMC V4.
