Hi, all! Name is John - user name refers to me and wife Linda.

Just purchased a 1985 Pro Line 21' Walkaround with a 1995 (or so I'm told)Johnson 175 Oceanrunner. Can someone here decipher the model and serial numbers and let me know excatly what I have? I need to order a repair manual and owner's guide. Looks like marineengine.com is a good bet. Anyway, here goes:

Model: J175EXEUE
Serial: G 04264494

Obviously, the motor is indeed a 175, but any other info. greatly appreciated. Given the cost, I'd hate to spend the cash on the wrong books.

Indeed a 97, what exactly do you mean part #'s for a manual?? Just try outboardbooks.com or ebay and you will find what you're looking for. Gl

If you want the genuine factory manuals for your engine (as opposed to the more generic and less accurate Seloc or Clymer's manuals) go to kencook.com, you can find the owner's manual and service manual for your engine. Look for the link for outboard manuals, then click on the Search tab at the top of the page. This will allow you to type in your model number, and is much more efficient than trying to find your engine by horsepower, year, etc.

Ken Cook WILL have your manuals and will ship them the same day (just did that two days ago!). They are not cheap, but from searching all over the web, it seems that it's just what it costs for factory manuals. Other sources sell them, but for just about the same price and you might have a wait while THEY order them from Cook - my understanding is that Cook is the official distributor of older OMC factory manuals and all other sources get them there.

The only cheaper alternative I've found is that you can sometimes find them on ebay for much cheaper, but availability is hit or miss of course. A couple of years ago I found factory manuals for both my '74 Merc and my '82 Johnson - but it took a couple of weeks of searching. Both were "used" but like new condition. It's definitely worth a try though. If you do buy one from another source, make sure it specifically covers the model number of your engine. This time I just decided to buy from Ken Cook rather than spend time looking.

Thanks, everybody. Just for the record, in my experience EVERYTHING, including manuals, have a manufacturer part number associated with them. The reason I asked that question was to make sure that I ordered the right thing from whatever sources I find. Nitpicky, I know... but that's me.

Hey John,

There is a guy in Lindenhurst, The Outboard Wizard (Lindenhurst Outboard), who has a lot of older factory manuals also. Found an original one there for my '75 70hp Johnson.

Right on Montauk Highway.

I'm sure there is a part number - but at Cook, you find it by model number (which is fool proof, don't you think?). That will probably bring up a part number as well (my recent order calls it an item number, fwiw). Go there and look.

I also have an older Johnson Oceanrunner for which I have a question. I have a 1985 185hp Johnson Oceanrunner. I'm new at this too and don't know the correct terminology but here goes: Just above the lower unit there is a retangular plate with 4 bolts on each side of the part between the motor and lower unit. These plates have a crack in the middle of each one. When I remove the plates there is what looks like a formed rubber part that shows cosiderable deterioration. What is the purpose of the formed rubber part and would the cracks in the plates hurt anything?

Without looking ,it sounds like you are talking about the lower mounts. When all is toghether check for slack in the lower unit by [shaking,pushing puling back and forth} replace if you have a lot of slack.
