Hellllooo...... Are you invisible to everyone else Ancient Mariner ???? I'm with him on this one. 100 psi on a '78 Johnson sounds pretty damn reasonable to me too. And I'd almost bet the mechanic never pulled the heads to inspect for internal damage either. If a cylinder were to be scored, I'd suspect you would see this via the compression test. Stop right now, take a real loooong deeeep breath, preferrably before you throw another dime into this thing. Let's get "YOUR" readings on those two cylinders and go from there. Again, stop throwing your money away until your convinced you've found the correct problem to repair. Whatever this mechanic has told you.........forget about it. It's winter time and money is tight right now. Keep this in the back of your mind. As far as the wiring is concerned, that's about as simple to fix as it can get. If you want to repair something right now, jump on that first. It could be that you simply have a bad ground. You did say you had a chewed up ground wire.......right? Your fix might just be something THAT simple. I strongly suggest you go back and read the "Ancient Mariners" posts and follow his lead as directed. As far as the helicoil is concerned, most any small engine repair shop can take care of you. You have to be certain that they are installed straight. There again, I wouldn't even mess with it until I KNEW that I needed to. This requires the removal of the head to fix. Then you'll need to buy a head gasket and sealer to reinstall. Hold off on it for now. No need in spending money for the spark tester either. You can make your own for nothing. I'll post a link to one with instructions on how to build it when I find it. Takes all of 20 minutes of your time to do. Follow his lead and you'll soon be on your way to fixing your REAL problem. Just my .02.....but it isn't my money......... ALAN

bashman, JB is right. He's been around a long time. Do the simple stuff first like your rewiring. As far as your starter goes, it might just need a good cleaning up. Take it apart and clean all the contact. Hose it down good with some cleaner to get all the black crud that collects in it. Could be your wiring problem is your starter problem. Make sure that the grounds are all clean and tight. The guy at Tyler's doesn't know what he has in the mountain of used/blown/junk engines that he has out back. He lets me pick through them and then sells me the part I need for half of the book. Your compression is fine and if you do need a helicoil, like everyone said, there are dozens of small machine shops in town that are starving right now that will do it cheaply. I know you said you don't want to put 300 bucks in it and it doesn't run but you have nothing to resell right now. It shouldn't take much to get her purring again. Keep up posted on the progress or any problems you may have. If you run into something give me a call.

Thanks guys

I'm not going to touch the head until I get the fire back in her I promise. I'll work on the wiring as soon as i get the part to do that. Then we should be ready to get down to business.

Wise decission Bashman. Don't replace anything until the repairs are made to the wiring. Then return here and post again. You can replace or repair as needed. Don't even replace the power packs or anything just yet. Simply fix the wires that are suspect, and return here for help. Be as specific as possible on what's going on and you'll be WELL on your way to getting this thing running again. Help is here. No doubt about it. Good luck............ ALAN
