Re: First Resroration! HELP!

Well just got the stern section of the deck off and it was just as everyone said.
Completely rotted stringers and everything.

One this however is that it appears a previous owner had tried to fix the part that I ripped up and did an absolutly horrible job. Might have even made it worse.

Making my way toward the bow hoping it stops.
Have a bunch of pictures to be uploaded tonight.

Re: First Resroration! HELP!

Well just thought Id give everyone an update after todays work also I have a few questions and need your opinions.

Today I was able to tear out the stern section of the deck but I still cant get the stern boxes.

The confusing thing is the foam doesn't feel wet but the stingers are soaked. Also. The stringers where so heavily coted in fiberglass that the fiberglass was still there but the wood inside was gone.

Here are some of the pictures I took today.
One of the previous owners had to have taken up the deck before because as you can see in the pictures there is new unglassed wood right next to the stringers. Not sure how far up they run yet.
Does anyone have any idea why these are here and if they can stay?
Apart fro the stern section the deck above it seems just fine its not wet.
I feel like everything the owner did was done very recently and I do believe that I may be able to leave it in and sand it all down and reglass it the way it should be done. What do you guys think? Bad Idea? Good Idea?

If I left that intact I would replace the foam and cut the stringers in the stern and replace them?

Please give your opinion
thank you

It looks like someone did a half a**ed job of a repair. I'm an "in for a dollar, in for a pound" kind of person. If it were me, I'd go all the way and be content with a good job.

Pull up a chunk of that foam and feel the bottom of it where it was laying next to the hull and you'll see why the stringers are soaked.

I wouldn't leave any of that junk in the boat, recently done or not. The wood is going to be wet and you can't glass it properly, and glassing over someone elses crap job isn't going to make it any better.

Take everything out and put it back together like it was built and your boat will be much lighter and stronger.

I deffienetly think I'm going to just redo the whole thing.
Like you said it's better to have a boat done the right way and not be fine with someone else's s***y repairs

Re: First Resroration! HELP!

Well didn't get too much done today was kind of busy only had a few hours to do some actual work on the boat.

What I did get done is tearing out the front of the casting deck and figuring out that the gunwales are also rotted.
Really not sure what to do at this point except just keep tearing everything out.
Im really gonna need some advice from you guys when I start rebuilding because I am really not sure where to start. It just seems like I keep finding out more things I didn't wanna know.

Heres some pictures I took today.

Another thing I did was drill into the deck and it seems like dry wood came up so im not really sure what that means.

I also peeled back some of the transom and that's gone too.

Re: First Resroration! HELP!

jigngrub is exactly right. Take EVERYTHING out. Make sure to keep the boat hull shape true and not twisted when all the stringers are out. Measure from the transom bottom to the floor on each side. Then do the same at the bow. Keep these measurements by weigting down the boat from the top to get the right measurements. All of this has to be done before the wood is removed from the floor and transom.

Re: First Resroration! HELP!

So are you saying to go from the bottom of the transom up to the height of where the deck was?

Re: First Resroration! HELP!

The point is to keep the measurements the same from before you do the work until it is finished. So you can measure from the best point that works for you. I would personally take measurements from the top of the transom to the floor at multiple points, and also from the bottom of the boat to the floor at the transom location. Then do the same thing from the rub rail all around, marking your locations with tape and/or labels. But do not move the trailer during reconstruction. Oh and one more thing, make sure the trailer is on jack stands, the tires can change from loosing air to temp changes.
