Hi Todd, welcome to i-boats!!

Take a breathe, use punctuations. It's damn hard to read as one big long sentence.

Do you know what model VP? What size 4cyl are you talking about? Volvo used to use their own 4cyls but nowadays (I believe that 1988 can be clasified as 'nowadays') merc & volvo use the same motors, it's just the outdrive and maybe some bolt ons that are different. Volvo make a very good outdrive. What are your fathers' concerns?

Aldo

Maby dad is concerned it is an i/o. Should be a lot of nice fresh water outboards in OHIO. Most boaters i know go back to outboards after there first i/o. Currently trying to repair a 290DP volvo. Seems like a quality product but i am glad it is not mine. fred

Chances are your father does not know what he is talking about, and just can't be happy for you buying a boat. meh

I work for a dealer thats a dealer for both Mercruiser and Volvo, and we always offer both for repowers, but would rather see our customers get a Volvo.
Personally, I would take a Volvo over any Mercruiser any day of the week.
