I'm getting ready to rebuild the carb on my 35 HP Chrysler (355HG #1050). I've printed out a lot of good advice from previous posts and that should help a lot.

However, I'm curious as to what the most common mistake you guys see when someone trys to rebuild a carb for the first time? Anything that stands out? Thanks.

Re: First Time Carb

a few things-- not soaking the carbs in a good carb cleaner so it get down into all areas. not blowing out all passages to ensure they are open and clean. not setting the floats right and not replacing the needle and seats properly.

If you follow your manual you shold have no problems, just take your time. Also check your carb and throttle lync and sink.

Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Some of these carbs do not have rubber tip on flaot needle, they use a rubber seal in the carb body, if you soak this carb in cleaner it ruin the seal.

The carbs are pretty straight forward but if you have any doubts, take some digital fotos as you go, to use as references.

c/6

Hooty

...and from this site I copy this: "The pen points to the low speed fuel calibration pocket. This area is where the fuel and air mixture is controlled by the needle valve. Small holes are drilled into the carburetor venturi under here. I recommend you remove this soft plug by using a small punch or screwdriver to puncture thru the soft aluminum and twist to remove. Blow it out to remove any crud that may have accumulated. A replacement plug is in the carb kit."

That was for a 3 hp '62 Evinrude. As everyone already said, clean it good. Or do it right the first time I might add. I don't know if that soft plug is included in your kit. But the most common mistake is ALMOST clean I'd say.

Re: First Time Carb

The manual I have (from Chrysler) says to soak the carb in gasoline. I've read it( the carb section) a couple of times and it doesn't mention anything about removing rubber seals that might get ruined. The manual is referring only to Tillotson WB carburetors.

Re: First Time Carb

Took the carb off and discovered that the kit I had did not match up with my carb. I then looked in my manual at all the different carbs that Chrysler made and my carb doesn't match up with any of them?

Could there be a carb on this motor from a different manufacturer? If I posted a picture is it likely someone would be able to identify it?

Thanks.

355 HA-HH 35 hp 1970-75
From this site: http://www.marinshopen.se/guide/chrguide.htm
But from this site:
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/select_models2.asp?type_id=CHRY
those numbers (35 hp 1975) are linked to a 45 hp and this page:
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/select_docs3a.asp?doc_nbr=FOB1989-1
And this is the carb (picture):
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/images/CHRYSLER/FOB1989.1/12B.png

#FK10057 or #F10057 REPAIR PARTS KIT, is that what you have?

I have no Chrysler manual, but I think these are the other carbs you found:
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/select_docs3a.asp?doc_nbr=FOB2129++

I can see there is some confusion. What do you get from this? Let us know.

Re: First Time Carb

I've got both the Chrysler manual and the Seloc manual for Chrysler OB. I must say that the Seloc manual is much more detailed in carburetor rebuilding. You can get the 35-55 hp carb kit at NAPA for about $13. You also might want to check EBAY. I just bought a Tillotson WB7A for $13 plus shipping.

Re: First Time Carb

Yes, I did get the right repair kit but it does not match up. I believe the right carb for my engine is supposed to have a single bolt holding the fuel bowl on. The carb on my engine has 4 bolts. I'll post a picture of it either on this post or I'll start a new post and see if someone can ID this carb.

The engine runs good right now. I put the carb back together (without replacing anything) and tested the boat on the water. It ran good. However, I want to have the replacement kit in my garage when it starts to run bad.

Thanks for your assistance.
