first time electric brake wiring

I have wired a lot of trailer connections, but never with electric brakes...I want to use the large 7 blade connector (universal) to put on my '07 Dodge 1-ton flat bed, the '05 P&J trailer has a 5-pin round connector. (of course I will use an adapter) The 7 blade female is factory marked-white, blue, red, brown, green, black & then the center. The 5 or 6-pin male is not marked. Of course I'm familiar with Brown, Green, yellow & white. I can use a test wire to find those on the trailer. Now I'm not sure on the brake wire...can I damage anything by powering up the wrong wire (backwards)? And, is there any 'standard' for those colors on the 7-blade connector, I see that there's no yellow...? ...is white always ground? is there a standard color for the brake wire? Also I have a used brake module without instructions, but wires are marked red-30amp, blue-trailer, black-ground and a smaller gauge light colored wire marked 'brake sensor'. Do I need a special 'sensor' to use with this module...? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: first time electric brake wiring

Go to etrailer and search for 7 pole wiring diagram. It will show you where all the wires should be connected. Verify with DVM. The small gauge wire on my controller went to the brake light switch so it knows when you hit the brakes.

The newer controllers seem much nicer. I would think about investing in a newer one. If you have a newer truck that has the towing package with a 7 pole flat, they very well may have an adapter that directly wires the controller in with the truck. I know my 2007 2500HD is set up that way. I had to hardwire the harness into our 88 Suburban, but it was not big deal.

As for damaging something if powering the wrong wire, yes you can so be careful.

As with most wiring there is a standard, but sometimes it is not followed, especially if a shadetree mechanic did any rewiring.
