I bought a $29 shop vac that I use only for slurping oil, brake fluid, and other gooey stuff. I keep it stored in a hefty bag to keep the drips and leakage under control. Stick a plastic tube down the oil hole, duct tape to the vacuum end to reduce and mate the fitting size, and slurp away. None of this pumping business.

I did this last Fall, too, and it worked really well! So much cheaper and more efficient than the lousy Moeller fluid extractor that cost four times as much.

Indeed. Few things make a fellow say to himself:self, I am a genius, like slurping fluids with a shop vac.

Well, yeah pricier than a shop vac. BUT, I've had mine 7 years, still worked perfectly. There is something about keeping them clean, and maintained properly. I think I would have spent more replacing shop vacs that are not designed for that purpose.

I don't think I'd be using a shop vac to suck up anything that's flammable!
Getting back to the original issue, yes if you do not have a good seal on the female fitting that threads onto the male fitting on the top of the dipstick the pump will not work well. You can use garden hose washers to make a good seal.

My problem with the Moeller extractor was parts inside the pump falling off repeatedly. Every time I went to use it I had to open it up and reassemble. Seems like a lot to expect from a pricy pump...

Motor oil is flammable? At over 400 degrees, perhaps. I'm not too worried about a vacuum cleaner generating that kind of heat...
