Keep a good eye on oil pressure, and water temp gages. Listen for weird noises, and how the boat handles.

Use all of you senses.Keep an eye on the temp, let it idle for a while and take notice of the temp and oil pressure.See if the temp changes as you throttle up.At first it may get a little cooler but keep an eye on it to see if it climbs as you cruise. When you throttle down, the temp will climb immediately.Dont go form cruising speed to idle.Prepare by slowly reducing speed as you near your destination, this will keep the temp from climbing.Check the bilge as soon as you start the motor and again before you leave the dock.Use your nose, sniff for gas and fumes.Listen for any noises. If you have a navy top and windshield, dont take it down this trip.Keep the wind out of your ears so you can hear.If your boat is open then sit behind the wheel and keep your head below the windshield and listen.Dont go far from shore, hug the coast for your first ride just in case you need to get back fast.I hope this gets you started.Charlie

Hey on my first trip I took a friend who new his way around boats. It kind of takes the pressure off you a little especially if your trailering it for the first time.A crowded weekend can be a little intimidating at the launch.
