Looks like minocqa is lucky - the aftermarket carb kit for his engine comes with a float now:
18-7222

Still, the OEM one costs $18, so it's not much of a savings.
OEM, PN 396701

One note wear glasses when spraying carb cleaner....that stuff burns and loves to ricochet back into your eyes.

Re: first time rebuliding my carbs, any advise..please!!!!!

I did my carbs a few years back myself with the Seloc Manual. Hadn't started the motor that year yet either.

I was sure I was going to take it to the Marina.

I followed the instructions carefully. Did all the work in a lasagna pan so I would no loose anything. I used spray cleaner.

Put it all back together.

Hooked the battery and gas up and turned the key.

It cranked but did not start.

Realized I forgot the choke. Choked the engine. Started right up!

Boat never ran so well.

Moral:

If I can do it (Trust me I'm no mechanic; I don't fix anythging but my boats. Prefer to call professionals!), then anyone can do it.

You'll be fine.

Post your results!

Joe

Do the carbs one at a time, Don, and be sure each goes back in the same spot it came from.

Good luck. :)

I'm not questioning, just curious. Why is this important? Are the three different?

I believe one has the cam pick-up that opens all three throttles. The other two should be identical. Check the throttle shafts for wear. They wear right where they turn in the carb body and leak air creating all sorts of nuisances. In extreme cases they can lean-out the mixture enough to do some serious piston damage.

Thanks. I'm about to do mine (first time ever on an outboard) and I'm the kind of guy that not only wants to know how, but why. Maybe it's a fault.

minocqa -- don't mean to hijack your thread here.

minoqua -

To gain access to all passages for complete cleaning usually means removing the aluminum core plugs. The factory manual should do a decent job of explaining this... Nonthteless, here's a couple of notes.

1. Drill slowly and stop drilling once you have gone through the plug. If you push too hard and go too far you can damage the carbs permanently.

2. Coat the edges of the replacement plugs with a light coat of Sealer 1000 or other fuel resistant sealer. Leaking plugs are unacceptable.

3. Don't kill the new plug when you reinstall it one or two medium strikes with a flat punch should do it.

Hope this helps...
