First year for AlphaOne drive?

I couldn't find this through search but my boss has a 1979 SeaRay that he was given from his dad (original owner). Its about a 23 foot or so with the 260; The odd part is the Alpha One drive on the back. He said that it was the original drive, never been replaced. I thought the AlphaOne started in the mid 80s. What year was the first year for the Alphas?
