Fish finder reads way to slow ???

Hi, while im here ill ask another question. I recently bought a Humminbird legend 2000 on a close out deal it works fine except it reads depths much slower then my Eagle cheapy model. I run a shallow river and need it to read faster as when it gets to 2 foot or so i start adjusting my route as not to hit the bottom. It has a gauge to adjust depth reading speed and even at the fastest its way to slow any help or ideas would be appreciated<br /><br />--------------------<br />a better fisherman then boat mechanic

I can no immagine what you mean by reading faster. The speed of sound in water is almost constant and most fish finders will report the depth (numerical readout) in real time and paint a vertical line on the screen with ever ping up to every 4th ping or somewhere inbetween depending on the depth range. At an rate the pulse repition rate for even the least expensive fish finders tends to run between 100 and 500 pints per minute, which means that even if Humminbird only operates at the lowest rate (100 PPM) and only updates the display with ever other pulse you will be getting revised depth information once per second (dependent on screen redraw rate, which typicall varies between one vertical line per 8 pings in very deep water to two lines of screen drawn per return echo). For whatever its worth even the cheapest Furuno fish finder (LS4100) has a pulse repitition rate in shallow water of 500 PPM. I would hope that your Humminbird can at least match that, because for even a very slow ping rate, say 200 PPM, and a straight redraw of one vertical line per ping you'd still be seeing updated depth information every 0.3 seconds.
