Re: Fish finder recommendations

I think you may want to start with a tutorial from Lowrance.

First you need to understand that you will not find many crappie with a fish finder.
Small fish are usually in or very near structure.
Very hard to see small fish in a bush or on a rocky drop off.

To start with in 30 feet of water you will see a 10 foot circle directly below the transducer.
This starts at the transducer as a cone about 2 inches and at 15 feet deep will show a 5 foot circle at 30 about a 10 foot circle and at 45 feet a 15 foot circle.

In shallow water power and resolution is not very important at all. So 240 or 320 vertical resolution is fine.
In deep water (over 200 feet) power and resolution is very important.

A GPS will likely help you catch more fish than a depth finder as when you find a bush holding fish you can mark it?s location and find it day after day.
As time goes by you will develop a list of location holding fish. Add to that location water depth and water temperature when you found fish there and soon you will catch lots of fish year after year.

Anyway take your time in picking a fish finder as if you take care of it, it will last a very long time.
My 1985 Lowrance X50 still works perfect. No it is no longer state of the art but works perfect.

Check out the tutorial it may help you a lot.

Re: Fish finder recommendations

Well I called lowrance today. It took about 30 seconds to get through to someone. What i liked about him was he didn't try to push something more expensive on me and that he took the time to answer all my questions. he said that if i bought a lowrance that they would exchange the transducer for a trolling motor mount transducer. He also said that i could skip that and bend the fins on the bracket and just go buy a clamp from the hardware store. I am now leaning toward the lowrance mark5x unless someone can convince me other wise based on the style of fishing i'll be doing.

Thats the reason i posted. What do you have?

I am using the Matrix 87c gps chartplotter ff now with 1 dual beam transducer and a wideside transducer, i had a Matrix 17 with just dual beam, and my original was a LCR 4000.

Re: Fish finder recommendations

Hey guys. I konw you've been through this a million times but here it goes. I'm looking for a new fish finder. I did a search on here and I'm still clueless. I plan on giving you guys all my wants and needs and let you decide.

1) I have a 12ft semi v (small boat) using trolling motor only (no motor)
2) I want a fishfinder that i can see the fish (crappie) not just a depth and structure finder
3)I will be fishing in fresh water no more than 50ft deep mostly will be fishing10-30ft
4) I do not need gps or si
5) I want to use a suction cup mount or mount it to the trolling motor. I don't want to mount it to the transum or shoot through the hall (aluminum)
6) I can spend about $350.00
7) i will be using the fishfinder mostly when stationary. If moving i'll be trolling very slow
8) I will be fishing day and night.
9) doesn't matter if its b&w or color. Or does it?
10) good resolution

I know some will tell me to search this site but i want to hear recent accounts as fish finders change all the time. I did have my eye on the new humminbird 570di which is not out yet but do i really need downward imaging with based on my wants and needs list. Any help and experience would be great.

Ok guys now for the final question. Keep in mind, I want the best unit that fits the wants and needs list minus #5. Should i get the mark5x or the mark 5xpro. Which one will help me better when mostly in a stationary position?

Once i buy one I want to buy a seprate 12v 8amp small battery for it. Will i be able to charge it with my 12v charger. It has variable charge rates 2,4 and 6 amp

Well guys. I ended up getting the lowrance mark pro. I also got a battery and a bracket for my trolling motor. Wish me luck.
