fish finder stuck in simulation mode

Just picked up a boat with an Eagle SeaFinder 480 DF fishfinder. It powers on but seems to be stuck in the "practice" mode. I've traced the leads back to the transducer and noticed both leads,(transducer and speed) have the insulation melted from apparent contact with the i/o engine. However, the wires inside do not seem to be broked. If I have to get another transducer for it, well, I just might as well upgrade to a newer unit. Any thoughts????? Thanks, Jim

The manual states:

Unit operates only in demo mode:
1. The transducer has not yet been connected or has been disconnected.
To leave demo mode, make sure the transducer is securely connected
before turning the unit on.

My guess is there is a break in the wire somewhere.

Seems from what I've read my fish finder will stay in simulation mode if it can't see the transducer. It's one of those things if you can borrow a transducer for a few minutes and connect it to see if it solves the problem. You might be able to ebay one for a few bucks so you are not really out anything. I've got one from an old Humminbird but it would be nice if someone reads this and can send you one from their pile in the garage :)

Depends on if you really liked it as the new models are pretty slick with built in gps, etc.

Always seems I end up with a cheap unit that needs an expensive ($112) transducer. Right now a 5" color combo is sounding pretty good.

Are you out of the water trying to view this? As I always understood a depth finder should only be used in the water. This could dmg the transducer. Also may be the reason it is not picking up anything and staying in demo.

No, the boat is in the water. Could it possibly be that the bottom of the transducer is just plain dirty? I'll clean it off tomorrow and see, but, I have my doubts. I will also try and test for continuity. It seems like a pretty good unit but don't know if it's worth the $112 for a new transducer. Anyone out there have an old one at a lesser price??????
