fish finder

hello,i just installed my new garmin fishfinder but i do not have a windshield to protect it from water splashing on the back of it.somtimes here in galveston bay it gets very choppy real fast and waves have broke over the front causing water(salt) to splash all over.will this hurt it untill i get back.they claim it is water tight.how should it be cleaned i.e. sprayed off?thank you

Without knowing wich model it is, it should meet JI-7 standards (30 second submersion up to 3.28 feet or 1 meter). Best check the model and cross reference the exact water resistance spec. But starting there, a wash or spray from sea water shouldn't hurt it. To clean it (assuming it is water resistant)simply spray it with fresh water and maybe a light soap and soft rag. If you have the manual it will be in the care and maintenance section, or post wich model you have and try google. Good luck!

it does say Waterproof design to IPX-7 standards but that does not tell me much as this is my first finder.

The water resistance is HERE . 1 meter for 30 minutes. Shouldn't be a problem with spraying it with a light stream from a hose (not a nozzle at full but an open hose!) to clean the salt off. Something to remember that does NOT include the power cables and corrosion. I would recommend a good di-electric grease on the cable connections.

Check Radio Shack, West Marine, or any Marine store, they should be able to get you the right grease.

Take gallon size freezer bag with you in your tackle box and stick that over it to help protect it from the saltwater. Corrosion on the connection would be you biggest concern.
