Fish With Shoulders

Now where the heck did that phrase come from? <br /><br />Its one of those things that just doesn't sound right. Brings to mind a deformed striper I caught on Lake Powel once. It had a huge stairstep in its forehead. <br /><br />Somebody says "that fish has some shoulders" and I get visions of toxic waste and unusual radiation producing bizarre mutants. Sure we got Swampthing and Spiderman that we, but we also got "The Creature from the Black Lagoon." <br /><br />It may be ok for the X-Men, but I prefer my fish to have fins and scales. <br /><br />

Hey Bob, Ive heard this expression for a bass that fought hard. Dont know where it came from though.<br /><br />I ask how your boat was running in another post you had, but lost track of it, How is it running, I love the looks of your boat.

The Baker is running pretty good. Not as fast I'ld like, but real smooth. Actualy the little Waco is doing pretty good to. You should read about my trip up river in her last week. Fishing Report, Salvage, Adventure

I hear that quite a bit, especially in reference to a 30-lb flathead catfish in the river or 25-lb class chinook in Lake Michigan. Means you better have stout tackle, hold on tight and you're gonna be sore afterwards! By the way, Bob, you're not any relation to Larry La Londe (guitarist/fisherman from Primus), are you?

Not that I am aware of. Its an old French name in the Americas. A lot in Louisiana and more in New England, Canada, and the northern midwest. To the best of my knowledge there have been La Londes in America since about 1680.

Im have used the expression "fish woth shoulders" for years. I use in reference to fish having a wide or broad shoulder area across the bach at the pectoral fins. Walleye show this charcater well for those ove 20".<br />Our neighbor could not get over me saying the fish had shoulders when she first heard me, and has a fit every time I say it. Butttt, what else would you say to indicate that the fish have a large broad back behind the head? -- it's stout backed???
