Fishbox hoses twisted. (any reason)?

The previous owner of my 21' walk around cuddy, twisted the hoses that go from the two fishboxes to the thru hull fittings. I am guessing that he did this to either prevent water from exiting or entering the fishboxes. Have any of you seen this done before, and why would he have done it. I am thinking of untwisting them. Could water back up into the boxes from the thru hull fittings if I do it?
Stalker

Can you describe these twists with a little more detail? Are they twisted together or individually?

Are they looped? Putting a loop in the line will help to prevent water coming into the boat should the thru-hull fitting get submerged. If they are looped, I would leave them looped, especially if the thru-hull fitting is near the waterline.

There are two seperate fish boxes each with it's own hose and thru hull fitting. Each hose is twisted around thus pinching off it's diameter seemingly preventing any water from flowing through it. The thru hull fittings are an inch above the water line, so maybe this is done to prevent water from backing through them.
Stalker
