Fishfinder turning off

So I bought a boat with a Humminbird Wide Eye fishfinder. It keeps powering off. It turns on for a few seconds, then shuts off. Sometimes I can't get it to turn on at all.

There's only 2 leads coming out of it......the power wire and the wire that goes to the transom.

Should I just run a new 12v lead direct to the battery, and if that doesn't fix it, assume it needs to be replaced ?
Thanks

Most Humminbirds use the same cables. After ensuring your battery connections are tight, remove the head, unplug the cables and take it to a friend with another Humminbird and try it with his cables. If you don't know anyone, most stores that sell them will test it for you.

When I hit a problem like that I will run leads directly from a battery to whatever it is, if it still messes up it is the thing not the wires, if it is okay you know it is the wires.

Had an old Eagle that did this and I felt kinda dumb after all the troubleshooting I did and found the actual problem. I had some sticky junk that was on the buttons causing it to stick in (coke, bait, who knows). I'd turn it on it would power up and then start the shut down cycle right afterwards. I had to take the face off and clean all the buttons off.

I would look close at the cable. Try powering the unit to the battery directly. Make sure the cable awg is sufficient.
