Re: fishing boat

I have been watching boats on ebay since last fall as I purchased my brother in laws boat and wanted to know exactly how much to pay.

Values for boats nose dive if they are more than 5 years old, and for your age of boat they are way on the bottom.

Please let us know of the condition of the boat, but I have to say in all honesty that most early 80's boats are pretty beat up. I got lucky as my brother in laws boat is an '84 with low time and never stored outside. The tires on the trailer even still have their nobbies, but that's a different story.

From what I've seen, your boat is in the $1500 to $2000 range if is in average condition for an '82. If it is in exceptional condition - motor runs perfect, floor and interior are solid, gas tanks and steering linkages are great, basically a well cared for indoor stored boat - then it may be worth almost $3000. OTOH, if the boat has ANY mechanical problems or mushy floor ect ect ect then you are in the $1000 and under range.

This is what I've seen. Also I noticed that in your state a few people got aluminum fishing rigs like in the 16 foot 25HP range for almost half of what they would go for around here.

That's what I've seen.

Jeff

Re: fishing boat

Straightup - I know a lot of guys with boats from the early 80's that look better than some less than 5 year old. age is one thing but how well was it maintained, equipment, how clean it is....more than just age. I sold a 1981 SUNSET fiberglass - deep v, 19ft with an 1987 225 evinrude two weeks ago for $12,800 Canadian, at todays exchange rate thats about $10,000 USD.
the floor, stringers, and transom were solid (replaced 7 yrs ago) paint was 4 yrs old and in mint shape, ran like a dream. sure it had lives wells, bait coolers, rod holders etc. but she was an 1981....guy that bought it said it was cleaner than some of the boat he saw at the boat show.

Re: fishing boat

Walleye - Yes, there are nice older boats out there as I gave the example of my brother in laws that I purchased last winter is '84 boat motor and trailer with less than 30 hours use and never stored outside. For that age of boat it is practically new. I don't doubt the condition and worth of your boat and your friends boats that know how to take care of a boat.

For boats in the early 80's our boats are the exception rather than the rule though. Most (not all) of the boats from this era that I saw on ebay and ones that I see with for sale signs hung on them in yards, are in pretty bad shape - thus selling for pretty low.

I guess the reality is that you kind of have to know someone like you or my brother in law to get the nice boats. My brother in law didn't just want to sell his boat to anyone after keeping it that nice. He wanted to keep it in the family.

So I guess the reality is that the marginal quality older boats are out on the market, and you have to know someone to get the nicer ones.

Hopefully for Bryan's case, the Astroglass is one of the well cared for ones. I just wanted him to be real careful as we all know (I owned a 1970 Larson for 6 years) that getting a boat that hasn't been maintained up to nice condition is not only expensive, but a LOT of work.

Jeff
