Fishing Casey Key, FL

I'll be in the Casey Key, Nokomis, FL area next week and I'm looking for tips on fishing of the dock. Is there anything in particular I should be targeting, and what is in season? I've never fished in Florida, know nothing of the species, types of line, rigs, or anything else. What would the experts here be looking to go after and how do I get em?

....would I be better off fishing the surf instead?

Yes hire a guide for a half day trip. You spent all that money to come down make it worth your while.

I've actually been looking into that. I noticed tarpon should be heavy around Boca Grande around that time but that would only keep me occupied for a day. If I wanted to do some dock, pier, surf fishing also, would I be wasting my time, and what is in season? Would I have any chance at getting red snapper? There will be a dock and a beach right outside my door so before I devote too much time I'm looking for whether it's worth the trouble at this time of the year. If it sounds like I'm a lazy and impatient fisherman, that's about right.

A half day fishing Boca Grand is going to be expensive but a memory to last a lifetime. Red snapper are in at least 70ft of water. There are fish to catch in close just to past the time. There is nothing nicer than to cast a line at sunrise on the beach.
I can't stress enough that if you spent the money to come down here and you love to fish hire a guide for at least a half day trip.

im not all that familiar with that exact area, but im betting you could catch some mangrove snapper, and maybe other species off the dock if you picked up some live shrimp at a local tackle shop. Even dead bait could produce fish, but it may just be random trash fish like jacks, ladyfish, grunts, catfish, etc. Fishing the beach early or late could be interesting, snook can be anywhere, and jacks are common all over south fl (no good to eat, but put up a great fight).

Gulf Coast, huh? Your best bet is to ask at the tackle shop.

I was in Marathon a few years ago (I live in FL, near the Glades), and the hotel had a dock on the canal. Frozen shrimp, and we were pulling in YELLOWTAILS left and right--from the freaking dock of a hotel. Not monsters, but the action was great.

You just never know.

Mind you, my wife isn't a fishing person, neither is my older son, so me and my younger son had to take the fishing where we could get it--while she was changing clothes for dinner out, and an hour here and there.

And if you can possibly catch a legal snook or two (the restrictions are mind-boggling and I don't even know if it's legal season when you're going to be there), MAKE SURE YOU KEEP AND COOK THEM UP! Snook is the best-tasting fish you're ever going to have. People who don't even like fish like snook!

I just Wiki'd where you're going, and there are some really big money homes there!

docks on the bays can be home to reds of varying sizes, snook, who knows. I've caught red snapper off New Pass in Sarasota in ~30ft of water at reefs, there's all sorts of things you can catch, but I agree with getting a guide. If you want to do tarpon fishing in boca grande pass......memory of a lifetime that I have yet to attempt. Tarpon ranging from 50-110lbs or bigger. Imagine the action!

I think Snook is closed for taking any fish home at this moment, they have had a large fish kill in the spring (red tide) so catch and release only. We did OK on the inter-coastal, live shrimp is the ticket, after dark is better than day time.
