There are two stories here.

1st. This one I've only been told about, but from what I can gather, my grandmother was probably one of the first people to sport metal in her nose. Apparently, my uncle managed to hook her nose while my mom, uncle and grandparents were fishing when my mom and her brother were young kids.

2nd. My dad and I were scuba diving in a place we like to up at my cottage because there are usually bass and pike to watch...as well, being a spot people will fish occaisionally, there are also lures and anchors. anways, one day we show up and there is nobody around. its the middle of the week and we figured nobody was coming. So we fly our Divers-Down flag and off we go. Well, about 1/2 hour later, i'm lookin around and i see something shiny hooked on a log. i figure, NICE, a brand new lure...1st mistake. now being as it's stuck, usually there is some line attached, so i took no notice of the line that was hangin off of it. So as i pick it out of the log, as soon as i get it out, the line goes tight and the lure gets stuck in what i thought was my finger, but turned out to only be my kevlar glove...thank god for kevlar. So now i'm being dragged up to this guys boat, and i'm sorta goin along with it, figure i can have some fun while i'm hooked on this guys tackle. so i stay deep, and come up right under the boat, and just as i get to the surface, my arm gets netted. I swear the guy nearly crapped his pants, and after a quick lesson in flags and what they mean, the fisher was off to a quieter spot.

MORALS OF THE STORY:

1. I am now a big proponent of licensing boaters.
2. Common sense isn't so common.
3. CUT THE LINE FIRST!

I'm sure there are fishermen and scuba divers that are gonna have fun with this one...go to town!

Sad thing is, there's people like this guy everywhere. It's been known for idiots to pull a diver up by his SMB line to ask what the SMB was for. It only takes one idiot for a fatality.

have this buoy to forewarn boaters that there is a diver coming up for safetystop at 5 m. Some idiot ran his boat over the buoy, snags the line in his prop and started to pull me up fast. Luckily the plastic clip broke (attached to BC) otherwise I might have been due for a long stay in deco-chambre. All this abt 10 meters from the shore where kids were swimming too. Nobody got his registrationnr. Hope the line in his prop fixed him good!!

A little off subject and not so funny but, back in the 70s I knew a man who twice in a years time hooked and reeled in a body that was floating in the bay. He used to joke that he was giving up fishing.

That really is no laughing matter. I go to school for policing and we get to hear horror stories all the time about people finding "Floaters". well, hope he didn't give up on fishing because of that...

I'll admit i'm ignorant of this, but what does SMB stand for or what is it? At least I know what a diver down flag is for.

Re: Fishing for....PEOPLE???

SMB = Surface Marker Buoy, basically it tells you someone or something is down there. Unfortunately, the only problem with that is that people don't know what it is, so they yank on it. If it is only attached to the diver, then they come up with the the rest of it. The problem being that a diver on the end of that rope is most likely doing a decompression stop, that simply put is removing all the compressed gasses from his/her blood stream, which is vital because if they don't, it will bubble out in their joints causing the "Bends"...can't remember the technical term though...then they have to be taken to a decompression chamber or failing that, dragged back down to relieve the pressure. I always keep my SMB on an anchor about 20' from my boat with a line from the boat anchor to the SMB anchor...makes it easier to pull up when its time to go, and also helps keep orientation...anyways, thats the scuba lesson for today...

Re: Fishing for....PEOPLE???

Thank you Silens for the info. I am only on inland lakes, but that doesn't mean someone isn't down, I've seen divers go over the sides of their boats on Torch Lake. But like I said, at least I know what a diver down flag is.
