I was informed today that I am one of the many being furloughed this evening if a federal budget continuing resolution is not passed and the government begins shutting down. My best scenario is that it lasts through the fall peak run of striped bass and tautog, giving me the opportunity to fill the holds while fishing is hot. I hope it doesn't affect you guys and others too adversely. See ya on the water..... Daily!

Let's hope this is short lived...

I was thinking of some striper fishing too, but here on Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, that might not happen if the national parks close. Hard to go fishing fishing if you can't get close to the water.

Is that an undocumented Federal benefit, Angus. :) May your lines be tight and the fishing season short, but fruitful.

I am fortunate to have commercial fishing as a fallback that I really enjoy. Not celebrating nor worried for my family, but concerned for students impact and others not so fortunate who will face consequences without a paycheck next week.

So glad you have an alternate. Rightly concerned for the others who will not be so fortunate.

Re: Fishing full-time

I have a question. Do any Govt. workers actually loose any money when and if the govt.shuts down? I.E. No budget, you're laid off but 3 days later you're back to work and somehow they find the way to pay you back for those three days? Just a question.

P.S. My pet peeve. All non essential personnel are told to go home. Well if you're non essential why the heck are you there in the first place?? !!!!:mad:

How does it feel to know that you're employer classified you as "Non-Essential"?? I have a number of friends that are in the same boat as you.

Re: Fishing full-time

I'll try to answer all.

There have been 17 shutdowns since 1977, the longest (21 days) being the most recent in 1995, and in each case the Congress authorized back pay for all furloughed employees. Nothing says they have to do this. Many are arguing that in light of sequestration, it is unlikely that back pay will be authorized. Many believe this will last thru Oct 17 when the gov't hits the debt ceiling (again).

Yes, furloughed workers can collect unemployment insurance in accordance with the rules of their state. If back pay is authorized, all UI payments have to be repaid to the state.

Classes have been closed and all 1000 midshipmen are in limbo. If the shutdown goes beyond Friday, they will be required to leave (self funded) the Academy. If this is an extended shutdown, it is likely the term or year may need to be repeated.

The gov't considers employees exempt or non- exempt when it comes to furloughs (not "essential"). If your position is funded via appropriated funds and not responsible for health, safety, or security, you are considered non-exempt and subject to furlough or RIF ( reduction in force).

Hope all my fellow Feds make out okay and this ends soon.

Closing down my building now and heading home. If there are more questions, I have plenty of time this afternoon to answer. : )

Re: Fishing full-time

Hang in there Angus. I have feeling folks that let this happen are gonna come to their senses real quick once this starts to sink in and they get nasty grams from the folks back home. Particularly the folks that thought it sounded like a good idea, until it actually happened. It's already starting down here in FL. I was on another forum this morning and the professional guides (i.e. small business owners) are all ready feeling the pain because Everglades Park, and others, are now closed indefinitely. I bet all the guys and gals who planned their vacation to the park for a year and traveled all the way down to the swamp are none to pleased, regardless of political affiliation. Now the guides have to scramble to put their high paying clients on some fish, quick, or there goes their reputation. Funny how people's opinions can change when an issue hits home. It's as if they didn't think a shutdown would really happen, or affect them in any way....wrong. Oh, and don't try to visit the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington monument, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Teton, etc........

Catch a mess of strippers for us. Tight lines.

Re: Fishing full-time

Down here most of the larger lakes are Corps of Engineer controlled. Of the lakes I use, one only has COE ramps, so the whole lake is closed. Two others have a combination of COE, state and county day use and ramps, with most under the COE. I think before I hook the boat up up, I'll be checking around because the non-COE ramps are mostly small and will be busy due to the funnel effect - almost like a summer holiday weekend. Many guides book on these lakes, so I'm waiting to see how they are/will be faring as this goes on. I'll be missing fun time, the guides, bait shops, etc are going to be hit in the wallet if it goes on very long.

Yeah, non-essential is kind of a relative term. In 2009 I was working for an automotive supplier. April 30 that year, GM and Chrysler shut down all their assembly plants (except Camaro) and about 700 of us at my plant suddenly became non-essential. In August we became so essential we had to cancel vacation plans for the rest of the year.

Re: Fishing full-time

I find this funny. Just announced on our local radio that here in Wisconsin our Democratic Senator just shut down her offices and went home, not going to answer any phones or emails until this is over. Republican Senator 2 offices are still both open and will stay staffed to answer phones and emails.

So at least here in Wisconsin which side is looking out for their voters? Both were just recently elected into office.

Interesting, I just got a call from my brother. He's about 2/3 of the way through his Boarder Patrol training.

They gave him a ticket to fly home this morning.

I do think I'll take him fishing (full time would be heckava cool) but I have a hunch he'd just assume get through training and start protecting our boarders, eh.

You can bet everything would get figured out fast if their paychecks got furloughed too.

Well at lest it's easy to plan around being indefinite and all :/ That's a shame your brother has to fly back Jas. Now it will cost even more for him and the Merchant Marie Students, et. al. to return to school, whenever that is. I just read an article on reddit about all the guides, bait shops, gas stations, etc... already losing money. Their business is very seasonal and has a tight profit margin to begin with. This is the last thing they need. In business, lost revenue is lost revenue, so they'll never see it again. Not the best news during the last few warm weekends of the year :/ Reddit also reports that a group of WWII veterans tore down the barricade at the WWII memorial when turned away due to park closures. Me thinks their reps may be getting some phone calls by the end of the day. I'd love to hear them try to explain that away to a D-Day veteran. I'm sure they'll just tell them the WWII memorial is "non-essential", or something. The saddest part of all is that the government will reopen again eventually, whether people like it or not, and this will have all been for nothing. Whoopie!
