If I am trolling for trout, does my mono line lb test have to match the lb test of my leadcore? For example....the leadcore I found is 14lb.....does my mono also have to be 14 lb? Also, do I then run a leader of lighter line, for example 4-6 lb test?

Re: Fishing Line Question.

You want mono lighter than the lead core so the mono breaks before the leadcore. I wouldn't go higher than 10# mono leader with 14# leadcore, so you don't loose your leadcore.

I run all the same sized mono from the leadcore out to the lure/bait, 50-100 yards, what ever.

I have 36# leadcore on my lead core reel, and run anywhere from 8# to 30# mono, depends on the fish I'm after. I use different rod's for light or heavy mono leaders though.

What fishrdan said makes perfect sense, but my personal preference would be fluorocarbon in the 10 to 12 pound range. My leader would be 20 to 30 feet tops. One thing about leadcore is that it has no stretch at all.You must set your slip a lot looser then what you would do on mono.

I got to ask, why are you guys still usng lead core? We tossed wire in favor of braid long ago.

Wire goes a bit deeper than leadcore and leadcore gives a very good stealth presentation a bit higher in the column. It's great for steelhead, cohos and lakers. When hunting for Kings I let out 450 feet of 45# copper and it takes the lures down to 90 feet at the same speed that leadcore goes down to 45 to 50 feet. This enables me to hunt for three different species at different depth and far from the boat.
