A while back I saw a posting of a homemade storage box someone built that had a lid and dividers built inside for rod storage and other compartments. I have been searching for days and can not locate the thread. Does anyone recall this or did I see it on another site? I am looking to build a box for the toon and would like to get some ideas. Anyone else have any ideas they want to share? I envision something that will go in the very back of the toon about 7 feet wide and maybe two feet tall and two feet deep. I would like to add foam on top with a vinyl covering so someone could sleep on it as well.

Thanks!!

Re: Fising rod box/organizer

Well it may of been mine, I made mine to hold up to 15 rods up to 8 foot long and other long items like the dock cover poles, paddle, boot hook, buck saw and some PVC pipe that's used to hold my black light in place for night fishing.

I wanted it to store my rods in so they can be left on the boat full time with out having to move things and being as I often have guests and small kids on board ever thing is safely put away. MY boat is kept on a slip so this works very well.

the box before I took it to be upholstered

and in use with rods and stuff in it

OK, since you offered:) How thick is the plywood you used? I want it to be sturdy yet weight is a factor. Also, did you seal it with some kind of sealer to keep the wood from rotting?

Thanks,

Curt

mesa, you could use 1/2" ply, but you would need to gusset the corners. I used to have a storage seat (similar to MH's rod box) in my old boat that was made from 1/2" ply and it was very strong. The gussets were a redwood 2x4 ripped in half to 2x2's, then cut in half again at 45*, everything glued up. Not sure if it will be worth the effort as with something like that you'll only be saving 30-40# using the thinner plywood. 1/2 ply about 50#/sheet, 3/4 ply about 75#/sheet.

I was thinking of building an internal frame out of 2x2's and then going with maybe 3/8" plywood. It sure would be a lot easier to avoid the frame and use 3/4" ply. I will have to weigh my options.

thanks!!

That is why I used 3/4. Around here a 4 x 8 x 3/4 is 34.00 a sheet

Re: Fising rod box/organizer

You were just about at the lake where I keep mine. Its out at beach fork on a slip, about 3 miles from Great Outdoors and so far the guys at Great Outdoors have been very good to me, but I do my own work but they do keep a good bit of parts on hand. While I haven't been out to cave run in some years I used to do a good bit of fishing there.

So far the rod storage box has worked out real well. I often have a 3 year old running around and its just so much easier when I am done fishing to put things in the box and not worrier about it. I got the idea from a friends bass buggy years ago, it had more of less the same set up but would only hold 6 ft rods

Let me know next time your over this way and we can meet up if you have time.
