Hi guys,

this is my first post and I'm a bit of a newie. I've rencently purchased a Chrysler 15hp outboard (1976ish) and want to give it a bit of a tune-up. I've taken the mag\flywheel off and cleaned the points etc... and when it came to setting them (points gap) it all came unstuck..In the manual it say set the gap 10 degrees past the "top ramp on the cam...the point at which further crankshaft rotation no greater breaker point opening". The problem is that I can't tell when or where the gap is at its widest. Any tips?

Also, there isn't a stop switch fitted - it seems that the only way to stop it is to pull the choke out. Is it possible to fit a stop switch to this model?

Cheers, Mark

Re: fitting a stop switch to my 152 Chrysler

many of these engines came with stop switches. A couple of models had them under the flywheel so that when you turned the throttle all the way down, the switch was engaged.

However, It is simple to fit a switch: Buy a normally open push to momentarily close switch and mount it through the lower cowl--often there is already a hole there. Connect it on the engine terminal board to the two brown wires coming from the magnetos. Pushing the switch will short the points across each other and stop the engine.

You will see a definite ramp on the cam--one side is steeper than the other and if you are lucky, your cam will have a slash mark or arrow. If it has these, set the points with the rubbing block on the line.

There is a relatively long open dwell time on the cam so while the manual calls for 10 degrees, you only need to be close to be at the high point or point of maximum opening. Set the points at .020 and be fussy: a difference of .0015 between them will give a difference of 2 degrees advance between the cylinders.
