Five wire tach harness?

On the front of my throttle control box is a plug-in tach harness with five wires. I can only find posts about three wire harnesses. The control is from a 1986 115.

I would be really grateful if someone could post what those wires are for so I can either hook up a new tach or validate the connections for the current one.

Here's the wire list:

White
Black
Purple
Grey
Brown

Since they are old, maybe my color identification is off, but I think its pretty close.

Interesting question. The old color for the tach sender was brown. The new color is grey. The old color for the 12VDC power to the tach was white. The new color for power to the tach is purple. Black has always been ground.

You might test the purple and white to see which one has power. Ditto for the grey and brown wires.

Well, I'm wondering if one of those +12v is on the KEY. I'll test, but I'm hoping to have one for the LIGHT on the tach, in addition to ground and send-signal. I suppose a bit of testing with the multi-meter is in order, as suggested.

This can be one of two 5 wire set ups. These are for tachometers with or without adjustable dials, trim indicator gauge and alarm horn.
Purple - + on tach.
Black - ground on tach.
Grey - to third terminal on tach.
Tan - to alarm
Brown/White - to trim gauge
2 Purple jumpers used from tach.-trim gauge & trim gauge-alarm horn
1 Black jumper from tach.-trim gauge

If your tach. has a adjustable dial on the back with 1, 3 & 4 set to 4.
If it has 4, 6, 8 & ALT set to ALT.

my tach only has 2 wires going to it, but does not work. what kind of tach do I need to replace it? it is on a 79 johnson 100hp.
