I have recently talked here about my kicker outboard. It's a 1984 4.5 Evinrude. I have read on both cylinder 75 PSI and it seems ok according to you guys. Haven't ask to a dealer yet but I will eventually.

The problem is that after 10-15 minutes running, it starts to smoke more when I give throttle and takes more time to reach WOT. I usually run the engine at 40-50 % speed range while trolling. It runs very well for the firsts minutes.

I think the problem is something in the carb, even if I cleaned it without a new carb kit, it still does it. The low speed is ok, leaner, it will shut off. And I shut down the engine for 5-10 minutes, it's hard to restart very often.

By the way, I have to put it to full throttle position for it to start.

I wonder what I should do, it still leaks a very dark brown/black oil from exhaust while not running.

Thanks for helping me, I really have to decide soon what to do.

Clean the carb really well and try a carb kit, way cheaper than a new motor. Has it got a fresh impeller as well?

I've done it earlier this summer. I've used Quicksilver Engine Cleaner and have followed the instructions. I ran the motor in a 50 gallons barrel. It helped a bit but no compression differance. I will try it again with seafoam and leave it all night long before running in the lake. Could it be the carb float, everything was clean in the carb.

For the impeller, I should change it, I don't know the last time it was replaced but water comes out well even if warm.


I'd like to try saving this 4,5HP, they are rare and expensive, it's the perfect size kicker for my boat, quiet, no vibration like a 1 cylinder outboard, has F-N-R.


My 1966 Evinrude 40 HP Lark VIII runs much better and had 105-110 PSI on both cylinders and that was before the season. I still reach quickly 30 MPH with my 14' fiberglass boat and it's not light.

Your compression will come up and it will also clean the rings if done properly.

A 1984 is brand new compared to the motor's other people run ;)
