When you replace a head gasket, you would have to readjust the valves after taking them apart, are you saying you didn't????? How did you get by that? Did you follow a manual......... of any kind?????

Yes I followed the manual that you sent me online. I followed it to the letter about 3 or 4 weeks ago. I'm not a mechanic and I am at a loss here so I want to make sure I did everything right.

I unhooked the line to the pump from that glass filter and setup a new fuel source. I ran it again and got the same results. The engine keeps dying at about 2 grand. Anyone got any ideas?

you may still have water in the fuel bowl in the carb.......
or you filter on the carb may be blocked.....
or you fuel pump may be getting bad.......
or your float may be set too high......
or your needle valve may be stuck or not moving freely.....

just a few thoughts off the top of my head....

If you are starving for fuel you may also have a stuck anti siphon valve at the fuel tank.

The anti siphon valve is incorporated into the outlet of the fuel tank. You can remove it for TESTING only. They are cheap.

Well I purchased a fuel water filter and will be installing that tomorrow. I also bought a rebuild kit for my carb and rebuilt it over the last two nights. When I broke the carb down it was incredibly dirty. Looks like the previous owner didn't winterize it or let the fuel turn to a nice gunky varnish. Cleaned it up real good and now it looks new. Will install that tomorrow as well. I set the float to the settings in the manual Don S pointed me to, so hopefully things will work out.

One thing that I failed to mention in my earlier post that I didn't think about. When I took the manifold off to do the head job I turned it upside down to drain the water out of it. Making it a little lighter for me to carry. I wasn't thinking that doing that might clog up the jets and passage ways in the carb.

I will also check the anti siphon valve as well and replace the screen or clean it as needed.

Sounds like a timing issue to me. Did you check what the advance is at WOT?

I set timing already. There was a SB for my engine that said it needed to be set differently than factory. I set the timing the way it said in the bulletin.

I followed the manual and it didn't say anything about what the advance was at WOT. Where do I get that info?

Not sure for your specific engine, but the mid 20's + the initial advance is normal for most.......
Again, I'm not sure about your specific engine.....
It should be in the manual in the electrical section......;)

Well I got the carb back on the motor and got the fuel/water seperator installed. I blew some starter fluid down in the carb and turned the motor over a few times and she kicked to life. I let it run up to op temp and rev'd her up and it seems like she's back to life again. I am going to take her out on the river this weekend and see how it goes. Thanks for all your help once again folks.

HECK YA!!!! Man I am so happy. We took the boat out this past Sunday. Took her down to the Potomac river. Jumped in and she fired right up. Took off down the river and at first she still had some hesitation when trying to accelerate, which I think was do to the new accelerator assembly. When I installed it in the carb there was no gas. The rubber ring around the assembly made it drag the dry walls in the carb. Got down the river stopped and started a few times and the hesitation is gone. Took the boat 26 miles up the river and back and she ran great!!

Got the carb rebuilt, timing set, new head gasket, new water/fuel filter and did all the work myself. That's the best part. Probably saved myself a few hundred bucks.

Thanks again to all those folks that helped. Wouldn't have been able to do it without you folks.
