Fix Volvo Penta Tilt mechanism or buy one?

I took the tilt mechanism out of the boat this past weekend and noticed that it needs fixing. Half of the base the bolts to the transom area is broken and missing. The end of the mechanism where the rod comes out of has a crack all the way around it. Seems like they tried fixing it somehow and the top of the relay box is missing. Can it be salvaged or should I just get a new or used one instead?

It was on a Volvo Penta 280 drive.

The lower housing is over $400 new. I bought a whole assembly on E Bay for $125. Between the two I was able to build one

I am looking at ebay, however they still seem expensive.

They seem to come and go with prices all over the place. It's a bear to go through all the pages on ebay so try limiting your search to "tilt" or something like that to try to narrow it down. I've seen them as low as $50 so it's worthwhile to search. You may find that you need a new motor so crosscheck part numbers. You should be able to find one for around $100 or so. You may also need new bearings but rebuild kits are available also.

Older boats can sure be a pain so it's best to just smile and convice yourself that it's soooo very satisfying and relaxing to have such a great hobby

I hate this system!

I have both engines out on my boat now, and I'm going to custom fab something hydraulic to go in there.

I can't see buying old junk for big $$$ just to have it fail again. I'd much rather spend the money on something which will be around a while.

I'll post pics when it's done.
